First Tooth Box: Kid Friendly or Are You Kidding?

The Jeanine Payer First Tooth Box ($275) is a classic silver resting place for baby's prized first loss. The round box has a hand engraved message that reads:

When a new baby laughs for the first time a new fairy is born, and as there are always new babies there are always new fairies. — J.M. Barrie

Do you think it's a classic must have for the memory bank or does its bank breaking price tag deter you?

I made this first tooth box years ago before having a child. Now I have a ten month old and understand how silly and over the top most of the baby things I have designed are...but I still love making them and will continue because it is a joy to make a new baby spoon, a tiny vessel to hold a first tooth or a simple baby bracelet--These things I actually am the most passionate about. I have another tooth box shaped in the form of a tiny egg and I love it and more importantly loved making it. I think the idea of finding an antique box to put them away is great, too. I can't apologize for the price because we chose to make each piece by hand in our San Francisco studio instead of in China or Mexico and our process is labor intensive to say the least since all the engraving is done by hand. I have been doing this for 20 years and hurt my feelings this morning to see this as an actual topic, as if the thing I have made is somehow offensive or a joke. Yes, there are many options of other things to buy that are less expensive but making a very public mocking 'vote'of something made from a positive place seems like being mean just for sport--I'm a person not a huge company-- and I am not sure I see the point the writer is getting at.

I love the idea of saving the first tooth to fall out, but that's way too expensive. Just find a cute box or small jewelery box and use that.

LOL, my dad used to make it quick and nearly painless for me.. He would tie some thread around the tooth. I'd close my eyes and he'd yank the fk'r out. I was so surprised at how quick it was over with. Ha ha!!

if i run across one of those tooth fairies, i quite possibly would kiss her fairie butt... all this teething... and the hurting they go thru, only for the lil suckers to FALL OUT!!! siiiighhhh... makes me freakin crazy... and i think this is adorable.. BUT you can find an old vintage silver box on ebay and get it engraved for a FRACTION of this ridiculous price!!!!

I like the product but the price is a little high, but if I was rolling like Cindy McCain I'd buy it.

Love the concept, but not at $275. I'll get one for $10 elsewhere.

These items are cute to look at but, so impractical, you would surely lose whatever small item you had in there. Scotch tape in the baby book always worked for me.
