Family Ties: Encourage Bond Between Siblings

Growing up, I took the fact that I actually liked my brother and sisters (with the exception of the occasional fight) for granted.

But, as an adult I realize not everyone has those friendly bonds with their siblings.

I think one of the most amazing parts of motherhood has been to watch that relationship blossom between my own children. To see an easy activity that helps kids appreciate each other, read more.

And to further encourage it, I ask them what they love most about one another each day. My daughter's answers never cease to amaze me. Her most recent responses were his laugh, his rosy cheeks when he wakes up, and how he lets her borrow his toys. Since my son is just one, I suggest answers for him.

My mom and dad always encourage my brother and I to be as close as possible, even now that we are in our twenties. My mom comes from a broken home and my dad's family wasn't that good either. In fact, my mom often says that my grandma (her mother) seemed to enjoy watching her daughters fighting and not talking to each other. It's a sad story which nasty outcome we are still living. Thus, my brother and I were raised to always be there for the other. I'm older than him for almost two years, but we look like were fraternal twins and we kind of feel that way. We study in the same college (he followed my steps), similar majors, and we plan to form a small compañy after we graduate. All in all, I'm sure I'll also raise my children to love and care for their siblings, because that way a family is truly strong.

I miss my sister every day! She moved out of state. We still talk a lot and I am going to visit for 6 days next week :)

my sister is 12 years older than me and she's never home so we don't even have time to fight. actually, we barely even talk at all or see each other in a week. honestly, i'v always wanted to know what it feels like to have a really close sibling who you can share secrets and clothes and gossip with.

My brothers and I fought A LOT but my parents always encouraged us to play with eachother as much as going out with neighborhood friends...also when we fought they made us hug and say I love you to eachother. I didn't think much about it when I was growing up, but even through high school, college, and mid 20s my brothers will always hang up the phone with I love you.

My dad doesn't speak to his brother, so I noticed there was a very conscientious effort to make sure we learned how to get along, work any arguments out, and love each other. He still says things to remind us, randomly, that in the future we'll be all we have and we should appreciate our bond. My brother and I are pretty close, and I know that my family valuing family and not taking it for granted has a lot to do with that... I do plan on doing much the same for my children.
