The 2011 Ford Explorer features an inflatable seat belt that looks like a regular seat belt, but in the event of a crash, the seat belt will inflate thanks to its special built-in air bags. This helps to keep kids and elderly passengers safe in the second row by distributing protection across their chest upon impact.
The belts reel in and out like regular belts. And unlike regular belts where the force of impact is only where the belt comes in contact with the body — therefore leading to neck or chest injuries in small children (which is why small children should always ride in a car seat) — these belts provide ample protection.
And if you have a child that loves sleeping with their heads resting on the seat belt? They stay protected too. These belts can also be used to safely buckle in a car seat.
