Family Collects $1,000 Worth of Spare Change

How often do you or your kids bend down to pick up spare change on the sidewalk? Probably not all that often, but for the Humphrey family the simple action has become a three year moneymaking venture. In total, the foursome has collected $1,084 that they plan on donating to charity. What started out as an experiment ended up teaching their two daughters the value of a dollar and currency exchange rates.

I do this but with my spare change..I never bent down to pick up coins on the street. I dont know...I personally think its gross to do it without knowing who was holding that coin before and how dirty their hands were.

A friend of mine and her husband are doing that this year. They started on Jan 1st and are keeping track of it on a website. So far they are only at $1.11 but I'm sure that it will accumulate faster when the weather heats up and there are more people outside since they live in a really cold winter climate.

My mom use to do this - although it was pennies only (go figure) and she use to make me pick up all the pennies in the street. She only recently converted most of them to cash but it was only a few hundred bucks.
