Mini Gym Equipment: Kid Friendly or Are You Kidding?

Keeping kids healthy and active is a national priority. With Michelle Obama naming the fight against childhood obesity as her signature initiative, the number of programs targeting tots has never been higher.

Forty-two percent of LilSugar readers said their lil ones participate in extracurricular physical activity, but some parents want more for their kids. W. C. Redmon Co. is now selling a Fun & Fitness for Kids line of exercise equipment just for lil tykes. The collection of elliptical machines, stationary bikes, and weight benches ($125 each) are all sized down for pint-sized athletes who can now mimic their mamas' exercise routines.

Would you buy mini gym equipment to encourage exercise in your home?

I think it's a cute idea. It's not as if having the kiddie exercise equipment would preclude your child from running around outside also. I think this would be great for days when it's too cold to be outside for long periods of time and on days when it's too warm (or the uv index is too high) to be outside for long periods of time.

i always was under the impression that working out with weights is bad for kids ... until their bones are fully developed or something ... hopefully that's not true, but i'd want to know before i considered something like this for my kid.

I think this isn't about being ridiculous and forcing a child to get exercise on a machine... they are just fancy toys that encourage a healthy lifestyle when growing up. When I was a kid my parents had an elliptical machine and I loved it. I played outside all the time, swimming, biking, playing with my dog,, running around. and then I had tons of imagination time with my dolls, stuffed animals, coloring books, cardboard boxes. but it was so much fun to be like a grown up and "run" on the elliptical with mom's supervision. How is this different than an kitchen playset? Same idea, just with exercise.

I ride a stationary bike most of the winter, I don't see why if I had children they shouldn't also. In fact, children feel happy when they're included in activities the adults are doing. We bought my cousin's son a dust buster, because he loves cleaning. He'll clean the house with you, you just have to show him how. He's TWO. When we clean with him around it's always with smiles, and music playing. He's been known to go dance around and clean up messes on the floor by himself now. I see this concept easily transferring over to exercise equipment. And yes, kids should be outside playing, but that isn't possible everywhere.

man i love it that looks so cool my kids would love it especially when they cant go out bc its to cold but my girls would like the bike the most i think its a good way for kids to burn off extra energy but not for a work out routine but then again my 7 yr old will watch and do yoga

when i was in first grade there was someone who broke his leg on a bike machine! those things are dangerous for kids! The mini elliptical also looks hazardous. And the benchpress is just silly.

i grew up playing outside so the fancy gym equipment i see for kids these days seems a little over the top. what happened to imagination and a good old cardboard box? also, if a kid has an elliptical at 5, what does he/she have to look forward to in the future?

This is one of the funniest things i've ever seen!! My boyfrends 2 year old nephew drinks chocolate milk out of the protein shaker bottles. I always joke that he'll be hitting the gym soon. this product made me laugh out loud

The equipment may put the idea that exercise in many different forms is fun and help them keep that attitude as they grow up.

Exercise should not something kids think is necessary, but something they love to do. Like Girl Jen said, they should be running around for fun.

I'd rather my daughter use kid-sized equipment than attempt grownup-sized equipment...but at the same time, I'd MUCH rather chase her around the playground and dare her to climb up the big ladder than put her on a kiddie elliptical.
