Ever Left a Dirty Diaper For Someone Else to Change?

Parenting is a dirty job, but someone has to do it. When it comes to diapering, many parents use the rule, "He who smelt it, changes it," which usually has both sides equally elbow deep in soiled nappies. However, some sneaky (and tired) mamas and papas looking to score a break from diaper duty have admitted to leaving a stinky one for their counterpart to find and change. There's no shame in needing a break every once in a while.

Do tell, have you ever purposefully overlooked your tot's poopy diaper in hopes that someone else will change it?

"The few times at night"? While babies, my kids would wake up almost every day with a stinky diaper and --GASP--lived to fight another day. Let's worry about real problems.

I agree with MissSushi. I have five kids and sitting in poop is never an issue. I don't change pee the minute it happens, but if the diaper's full or it's poop, it's changed. Period. As MissSushi said, the few times it's happened at night, there's a rash by morning, so why would I deliberately let it sit during the day when I know it's there and can change it? And no, I don't leave diapers for someone else. If I want someone else to do it, I just ask. I rarely ask though, diaper changes are no big deal and take less than a minute.

Yes, they sometimes poop at night and don't wake up.. and most of the time have horrible diaper rash by morning. Are you really advocating leaving a child sitting in their own poop? Would YOU like to sit in your own poop because your caregiver doesn't feel like stopping for a minute to change it? Sorry, 4 kids is NEVER an excuse to leave a child sitting in their own feces. Wiping front to back is one of the major lessons you teach your kids, so why in the world would letting them sit in a diaper thats squishing it up against their genitals be okay?

1. You do not have to change a wet diaper the second it happens--especially disposable ones because they're so absorbent. 2. Kids poop at night all the time and wait until morning to be changed. 3. Why so serious! In the real world, it's ok to wait a few minutes to let someone else take the stinky diaper. I wouldn't make it a habit, but with 4 kids it sometimes happens.

No I've never just left her in her diaper for my boyfriend to find. I only work four days a week, and only three hour shifts at that, so I do most of the diaper changing. It's become a habit, and I rarely think twice before I get to changing. If I've had a long day I'll ask my boyfriend to change one.

No, I NEVER leave a stinky one, or even a wet one. I just think about it this way - Would I want to sit in my own crap or pee? I don't really think anyone can justify laziness in that situation. If my husband is available, we take turns changing diapers, but the minute our daughter goes she gets changed. I had a "friend" come live with us and found out she had pretty deplorable habits.. she would leave her daughter in really poopy diapers for hours unless i point blank told her to change it, sometimes more then once. The poor kid had a pretty raging infection because she was left in very soft poopy diapers so much. If she didn't poop, her diaper didn't get changed, period. She wore her morning diaper all day until she pooped, and went to bed in whatever diaper she had been wearing the rest of the day.. child abuse in my opinion, and I told her point blank it could NOT continue at all, much less in my house.

I never actually left it for someone else to do, I'd simply ask hubby to change it. But I did most of the diaper changes since I was the one at home all the time with them.

I haven't. Not for any righteous reason, but I stay home with my son (and will continue to do so with my baby - due in April), so I just got in the habit of changing him when he was poopy or wet. I'm the oldest of seven children, so diapers ceased to be a big deal as soon as I was old enough to change them. When our son was tiny, my husband (youngest of two children - no experience with babies) was so nervous and easily grossed out that I guess I just didn't expect or ask him to do much outside his comfort zone. That changed over time. He got more comfortable, and I started asking for his help. He's a wonderful father - very involved and MUCH more knowledgeable about babies now. Our son is potty trained, but with another one coming, we've talked about it, and he definitely plans to be more "hands on" during the baby phase this time - diapers and all ;).

I've not left it for a long time, but if my husband hasn't changed one in a while, I'll leave it for a couple of minutes if he's not in the room. I would never leave it for more than about 5 minutes - and that's probably too long. I have had one left for me, though. My darling (not really) mother-in-law babysat for me one day so I could go to the doctor for a smear, and I got home and the whole house stunk. I leaned down to give my daughter a kiss, and said "ew, what's that smell?" and my MIL said "oh, she just did that". It was a very messy one, and had gotten onto my daughter's clothes and everything. This was NOT one that had just happened, I had to give my daughter a bath to get her cleaned up.

When I was younger I wanted to help my mother with my little brother and change his diaper when she was out of the room. Of course I found it far too gross for a five year old to handle and I left hi on the floor diaper open and went to find something else to do. My mom was definitely surprised.

I'm not normally sneaky about it, I just outright say something. Usually, "Honey, I'm tired and have changed ___ poopy diapers today, would you mind/please get this one?" Given that I'm and at home mom, and my husband is usually only available to change 1 diaper a day on average, there's not usually much arguement.
