"This is so sensitive, because every person is different," Post says. "It's really important to tread carefully. You want to obviously express your condolences, say, 'I'm so sorry — I know you were really looking forward to this.' But what you don't want to do is start getting into your own stories right away, or say, 'Oh, this happens to everyone.'
"And the one thing you really don't want to say is, 'Some things are just not meant to be.' It's really important to let her guide the conversation. Let her know that you're there for her, whatever she needs, whether that's to talk, to go for a walk, or to have a total distraction from thinking about it."
