Is Early Maternity Leave Right For You?

The last few weeks of pregnancy are wrought with anticipation. For some expectant women still on the job, the pressure of getting their work done while preparing for their upcoming arrival brings on too much stress. Add a commute and physical discomfort and some mamas-to-be beg their doctors to order them home. Other ladies stay in the office until they go into labor and save their leave for after their lil one enters the world. Nesters prefer to spend their final weeks preparing the nursery and resting. Ellen Pompeo, who is expecting her first child this Fall, is going to take an early maternity leave from Grey's Anatomy. What did you do while waiting for your baby?

Pencils 3 years 40 weeks

I left two weeks before my due date because I had a long commute and I just couldn't take it anymore. Also, I was hoping that I might go early (there were reasons I might have.) Except I didn't, I was a week late. So I ended up being home three weeks before the baby, and I was sorry about that when I had to go back. I wasn't ready, but I had no choice, I needed the job and they would have fired me if I took more time.

Left work two weeks early. Baby was a week late. Couldn't be there anymore though. People were driving me nuts. I'm glad that I took off early though... Was also finishing grad school and needed to finish my paper. Pregnancy carpal tunnel wasn't helping the situation...

sometimes i thin kthat maybe i'll need/want to take early leave -but then i'm stuck on the back end w/o the income and that's something that i really need right now. i'll have to wait for the next month or so to find out what my dr says. personally - i think that i'd rather try to work as long as possible so that i can have a longer stress free work free time after my babies come.

I left when I was about 8 1/2 months pregnant. I pobably would have worked until the end, just becuase I wanted to make the most out of it since we were planning for me to stay home, but i kept passing out and ended up falling, so that was that. The building was just too hot - they woudlnt fix the ac - and i didnt deal well with heat the entire pregnancy.

When I was pregnant with my 1st, at about 6 weeks I had to have my appendix removed. Because it is risky while pregnant, after the surgery my husbnad and I both felt that we were very lucky to still be pregnant. I went backt o work for a few shifts and then decided to quit. It was more important to take care of myself and this baby than working. Over 7 years and 2 more kids later, I'm still very glad I made that choice. I know not everyone can do it, but if you can and want to, stay home as long as possible with your kids-they grow and change so fast!

I'm 37 weeks right now and still working. It's definitely tough, I'm exhausted, achy and stressed.

My mom quit her job when she got pregnant with me, and again with my brother. She was incapable of working, and was high risk. She nearly died both times, and I was premature. I also know a woman who was fine, but left her job. Her husband encouraged her, since she wanted to be a stay at home mom anyway. She hated her job, and he said she might as well just leave since she is going to anyway. I do know people who worked up until their labor -- a co-worker of mine left the day the doctor saw her daughter's head. 1 day before giving birth! For me, I'd think I'd like to work until it becomes uncomfortable or until circumstances prevent me from working any longer.

I went on mat leave about a week and a half before my due date...and she ended up being late. So I was bored to tears! I definitely would have worked a little longer. But it was nice to put my feet up and relax before my daughter came!
