Duggars Take a Family Vote on Baby's Name

Would You Let Your Kids Name Your New Baby?

Last night on 17 Kids and Counting the Duggars took a family vote on what to name baby number 18. While Jim Bob joked that his vote was worth 20 and Michelle's should be worth 40, they ended up naming their new bundle of joy Jordyn-Grace Makiya by popular demand. Do you (or did you) give your children a choice in naming their siblings?

I take my kids name suggestions into consideration I might now chose the name they want but I listen to my older kids ideas so they feel they have some part in choosing there new siblings name.

If my son had his way his little sister would have been Diesel. So, no, we chose a name for our daughter ourselves.

We just had a baby in November and although we didn't let our 3 year old pick out her name, we let him in on the process. We had a couple of names we were deciding on so we asked his opinion and took into consideration his thoughts. In the end, we all ended up liking the same name so it was easy. But we did let him give her a "name" while I was still pregnant - he choose to call her "Peanut" which he still uses quite frequently today!

My nephew picked his sister's name. It wasn't up to him, but my sister really liked the name he suggested.

My mother let me name my younger sister,, she was the last baby to be born and I was 16 at the time.. her name is Brianna

I like the idea of picking out your 2 or 3 favorites and putting it to a vote. In our situation though, I don't think it'd be very helpful because there's only 3 of us. I would definitely like my daughter's input on a new baby name!As for the Duggars, all I can say is ditto lickety!!

I have to be honest, there are a handful of people out there saying its primarily mom's decision on the baby name, as if Dad doesn't count, or counts very little. That's really no way to approach baby decisions or a relationship in general. Just think about how that would make him feel....

no, they name the pets only at our house. my 7 year old made up the name "ithaney", like "with" (without the "w") ah-knee. and i'm sure that would be the choosen name. i think the duggars are weird-o's. 18 kids and they are already talking about more? it's as if they have an addiction to having babies.

I don't have kids yet but I can say honestly that I wouldn't let them choose their brother/sister's name. It's cute to have them make suggestions but in the end it would be mine & Dad's decision. Especially mine because I carry him/her in my belly for 9 months :pBut then again maybe when you get to child #18 it's easier to hand over name choosing to your kids;)

I want my kids to be close in age, so if a 2 or 3 year-old were to pick out a name it would prob be spongebob or poopoo head. No thanks.

LOL, macgirl. Too true about the Duggars!I recently found out that my awesome great-aunt (now 95) was asked to choose both her brother's (my grandpa) and sister's names. She was quite a bit older when they were born, and I guess her parents said she could pick them. She choose Douglas for my grandpa after a good family friend she admired. I can't remember why she chose her sister's name. If I ever have a girl, I am strongly considering naming her after my aunt. She's the best.

I don't have kids but I most likely would not let my kids pick their siblings name. Naming my children is the most exciting part about having kids for me right now and I feel like the choice should be mine (with a tiny bit of input from the husband). I already have names picked out anyway.

I think the people who raise the baby should be able to pick out the name. So in the Duggars case it makes sense that the kids would get to choose, oops did I type that outloud? My oldest is 10 and probably would have had decent input but since it was my husbands first baby we worked it out between the two of us. I do have a friend whos older brothers were allowed to pick out his name. He is named Beau, but it was based on "Bo" as in Bo and Luke Duke :-)

The Duggars actually didn't either. They put the names up for a vote, they didn't let the kids come up with their own. That's a situation I can see much more than letting the younger ones freely pick out their own.

Probably not, like alot of people we choose our names years and years before, but most kids dont choose names that ARE names.. its like when you let them name animals, you get alot of spot, brownie, etcs, lol. My younger sister wanted to name our youngest sister Cricket.
