Donor Sticker on License to OK Reproduction After Death?

The will to donate one's organs is as simple as a sticker affixed to a driver's license in many states, but preserving the deceased person's sperm for relatives to reproduce after the death seems to be a bit more of a gray area. A grieving wife may ask for a loved one's sperm so she can fulfill her dreams of bearing her late husband's child. Should this privilege extend to other family members?

Recently, a mother in Texas asked for her 21-year-old's sperm because she plans to eventually find a surrogate to carry her late son's child. Do you think loved ones should have this power or should people be required to register for this much like organ donation in the event of death?

Aimeelo -- My hubby is a paramedic and, sorry, but they don't go through your wallet to see if you're an organ donor before they start CPR. I hope you're not offended by me correcting you, but I wouldn't want people thinking that EMS is out to shorten the donor waiting list by not helping people in need. Their priority is to get you stabilized and safely to the hospital if necessary, nothing more.

Aimeelo - I work in the medical profession - that is a load of crap. It is a known Urban Legend. Medical professionals - by law must do everything possible to save someone's life - unless otherwise specified (such as in a Living Will or if their POA says otherwise). Stop spreading this type of false information. There are so many people out there who truly need organ donation. This type of crap prevents people from giving their organs when they are no longer in need of them.

NO, Unless a person has put into writing before hand that they want thier sperm or eggs harvested at death than any family members afterwords have no right to make that decision for them, especially because when one is grieving you arent in your right mind. Children deserve to have thier parents around, and starting them off in this world with only one, AND the stigma of being a child of the harvesting of sperm from a dead father? is just wrong.

Wow Aimeelo, that's really scary and messed up! As for the issue of harvesting sperm after death, there is no benefit to it. Donating organs can save other people's lives, but using a dead person's sperm to create a new life isn't really helping anyone.

I would say gross. I sounds a little selfish. Side note:My BF's father is an ER doc and when he saw that I had the donor sticker on my license he told me to take it off. He said if the docs and paramedics know that you are willing to donate your organs, they are not going to try as hard to save you. He said that it is better to let your immediate family know your wishes and let them tell the hospital. It's a sad thing that it happens, but the donor wait list isn't getting any shorter.

So let's say my husband and I with all our kids were in a horrific accident and no one survived beyond being brain dead on life support. Would I want my mother in law to take my husbands sperm and make her own grand children... no. I know it would be a devastating loss but that's just weird. I know she's not putting a burden on anyone other than herself but that wasn't what we as a family had planned or wanted.

I said yes.I find it a bit (well, even more than a bit) weird ! =SBut at least, why not...But I said no for the familly because I'm not always sure the family does what would have been the best for the died person, just what the family wants. I mean that our family doesn't always know us as she should =/ Whatever, I'm not american, I'm not sure here something like this (a question like this) will ever be taken seriously.
