I've been catching up on AMC's Mad Men and was touched by a scene from season one when Betty's young neighbor Glen sat down at the piano and plunked out a pretty tune. Sadly, his mother, Helen Bishop, yelled at him a second later to stop or risk waking up his sister. The moment broke my heart because it appeared the tender character was trying to express himself and I was reminded what an important role music can play in a child's development.

Our ten year old son plays violin; his nine year old brother plays piano. We don't tend to start them on instruments until they are eight. The two youngest (ages three and six months) are a bit small yet.

Between my three kids, they can play guitar, drums, bass guitar, flute, piccolo, and keyboard. I can't play anything, sadly.

they have been taking piano lessons for 2 and 4 years, and my middle daughter has taken voice lessons for 2 years, but do they "play", lol, i dunno. they can do fine at a recital but it's not as if they could be the replacement at nordstroms.

My older son has no interest in music, he's all about building stuff. But my younger son can pick up an instrument and make a t une on it without trying.
