From the cycles they complete every month, to their ability to house and nurture a growing baby, our bodies are pretty miraculous. But when they let us down, it is hard to understand their ways. Nobody ever said that miscarriage was a pleasant topic of conversation, but it is important to know the facts.

If you take a Reproductive Biology class you'll learn exactly how complicated pregnancy is. So many chemical reactions have to happen in the right order in windows only miliseconds big it's no wonder so many zygotes and embryos don't successfully implant.Unfortunately pregnancy is not the simple miracle that people would like to believe. It's an extremely delicate process dependent upon biological factors all working as they should. It is a blessing in disguise that our bodies are sophisticated enough to know when it's not going to work cause we are talking about babies potentially being born without entire systems. Such as digestive tracts, an extremely basic system starting from the forming of the coelom in vertebrae. Without our biological fail safe we would have to deal with euthanasia of babies, more stillborns, and deformities leading to death immediately after birth.

UrbanBohemian, the high miscarriage rate is constant across most populations. It's like Lawchick said, it sometimes happens so early women don't even know they're pregnant.

I was surprised at the high miscarriage percentage too. I'm probably not surprised though. It could be a number of factors: age, smokers, other health problems. The question also didn't say if this was in the United States alone. Perhaps the statistic includes women from other parts of the world as well.

I wish this was more well-known. My friend just had a miscarriage. She wouldn't have known except that she was tracking her cycle closely since she was trying to get pregnant. She was enormously comforted when she found out how common it was, but it's not like this is something people talk about.

good point schnappy. the webmd article kind of freaked me out. My mom had multiple miscarriages and a stillborn and now I'm TTC and find out a history of miscarriages on the mother's side can increase my risk :( Wish I didn't even know that.

lawchick, many miscarriages happen so early that women don't even realize they were pregnant (just thought they had a later or heavier period). These are included in the stat, so it's not quite as alarming as it sounds.

Most doctors tell you betwen 1 - 3 months is how long you should wait to TTC again. After my EP my doc told me she would probably see me again shortly in her office PG. Well that has yet to happen. Some docs tell you that you are more fertile after a m/c.
