Do You Judge Pregnant Women Who Drink?

I've been at a few festivities lately where I've noticed very visibly pregnant women imbibing in a festive drink or two. While sixty percent of lilsugar readers said you wouldn't take a chance by drinking while expecting, do you judge mamas-to-be who do?

That's quite a mouthful for someone who will only identify themselves as "annonymous".... certainly your ideas about judgement dont pertain to you judging those who judge the irresponsible selifish drunken pregos. I used to be a server, and walked out on a job (the only job I've ever quit without adequate notice) because my manager wouldn't back me up when I refused to serve a pregnant woman her 4th beer one night.

NOONE has a right to judge any woman for what she chooses to do while she;s pregnant. those with extremely negative opinions about what women do while pregnant are intolerant bigots who will ultimately be judged themselves.

Even though studies show it's okay to drink in moderation, i never did, from a month before my baby was conceived until i completely stopped nursing. I also avoided caffeine while pregnant and kept it in moderation while nursing. That was my choice, it is up to the individual to make their own choice. But i would probably feel a little judgemental if i saw a pregnant woman drinking in a restaurant. Like someone above said, i'm only human.

Drinking during the first few weeks of pregnancy doesn't usually present a problem. Plenty of women don't find out they're pregnant until the second or third month anyway. If they are clearly pregnant, it's still their choice. Doctors and scientists are constantly coming out with bogus research to scare people. Pregnancy is a stressful time as it is. My gut instinct tells me that a glass of wine or one drink a week, will not harm your baby in the worst sense. Then again, you'll never know until the baby's born, maybe even later than that. Either way, it's not something to freak out about. Women are too paranoid. Calm down. If you stay calm and stress free, then nothing can harm you.

If I saw a pregnant woman who was drunk I would judge her, but if I saw a pregnant woman drink one small glass of champagne at a celebration of some sort I would not think anything of it. Sparkling apple cider, if available, would be a much better option, though.

I dont know if i would "judge", as in start thinking nasty thoughts about her abilities to carry her child, but i wouldnt ever do it. The risk is just too much, with too little information backing it up either way. I try to be as careful as possible, limiting things that are harmful for ME, as they are obviously going to be harmful to something im growing inside me. That being said, Wine isnt the root of all evil, id be much more worried about an openly pregnant woman staking out the cash bar. I just think there are some things you should be happy sacrificing for your children, like sleep and pesonal time.

I just don't understand that a woman wouldn't be able to give up alcohol for 9 months. If you're not an alcoholic than what's the problem? We don't know how harmful it can be so don't risk it. I do judge smokers harder, because we do know for sure that that kills.

It depends on how much she is drinking. One glass of wine at a party, late in the pregnancy? Not a big deal. Downing tequila shots like they're going out of style? A BIG DEAL. But still... back when my mother was pregnant with me, she drank and smoked regularly. Nobody knew any better. And I turned out fine.

Smoking is worse than drinking while pregnant in my opinion. I craved beer in my 2nd pregnancy so If I went out to dinner I would order O'Douls which is NA and you wouldn't believe the looks I got. People acted like I was stabbing myself in the stomach, it got to the point where I'd raise my glass and smile at the jerks.

I won't lie, I would be disgusted if I saw this. Even just a glass of wine. There is no "safe" amount, why take the chance? I won't stop you but you can bet I'll be judging. And SMOKING, don't even get me started!! Before even trying for a family, you should quit smoking, and give up drinking for the 9 months after you find out, in my OPINION. opinion opinion opinion not FACT.

And you know why I am so violently against this? I work with Disabled kids every day. There are kids in the special day class who has FAS from their mom drinking even one glass of wine a week while they are in the womb Alchol is a drug just like tobacco and cocaine. You would not smoke while preggo and most likely not do cocaine. So why would you risk your babies health if you dont have too?

Oh chill the heck out plus_2 _kid- Its my opinion. And I dont have a giant SUV, I have a very low-polluting car and drive as least as possible. If you feel judged by my opinion then thats your problem not mine. The question originally asked was if I judge- and yeah I do. Because if I see you having a single glass of red wine than how am I supposed to know if you are having more than that? And we are human meaning we judge- omg! and the "they" is multiple studies done by Stanford etc. Im not going to try and argue with you anymore. Ive said my peace you have said yours.

Oh yeah and most women aren't only concerned if their baby comes out alive... they are also concerned about brain development, and alcohol has been proven to cause FAS- which causes intellectual disabilities.

Krae!! Honestly... church should be a good influence on you, not someplace where you feel pressured to consume alcohol when you think it could harm your body. If its your doctor's opinion that its OK to think alcohol during pregnancy... its simply that-- an opinion!!! Nobody really knows the safe amount to drink during pregnancy, so why put your baby at risk? BTW, I am in med school and I have learned that during the first few weeks of pregnancy, it is very important to stay away from things like alcohol which could harm your baby.

tngirly- We litterally just studied this in my Bio-psyh class. It has been proven that if alchol is consumed during the "critical stages" of pre-natal development it can cause FAS They do not yet know what is a "safe" level to consume while preggers, so why are you going to risk it? You really can not give up drinking for 9 months for your baby?

Well, I know guinness is full of iron and can be beneficial for pregnant women and I can't really find fault with an odd glass here or there. BUT, I would probably judge a pregnant woman drinking to be honest, so if it were me, i wouldn't do it in public.

I checked other - if a woman is out of her first trimester and only having the occasional drink then I don't think it's a big deal. It's true that no amount of alcohol during pregnancy has been deemed "safe", but it's also true that there is no clearly defined amount that is considered harmful either. It's impossible to do double-blinded studies in pregnant women because of obvious ethical issues. It's the same reason why drugs are given pregnancy ratings and many fall into the "no man's land" of B-C, which in my mind is the equivalent of throwing your hands in the air and saying "we don't really know the effects, but it's probably ok". In the end I think it's up to the individual woman (and hopefully in conjunction with her doctor) to determine the risks/benefits and decide what's best for her. If that's abstaining from everything, fine...if that means the occasional drink to relax or a benadryl for your allergies, then that's fine too.

I think pregnancy and what you do during your pregnancy should be guided by a doctor, but mostly your choice. If a doctor says you can have a drink, and another doctor says no...you have to go with your gut. Do you really believe a glass of wine once a week is going to cause your baby to die? If your doctor says to eat more salad and less bagels, and you try, but you crave bagels -- eat a damn bagel, it won't kill your baby, maybe just make him a little bigger. My mom's doctor told her that she could stand to be healthier during her pregnancy. She got four ice cream sundaes a day, ate 5 hershey bars during the day, and had two bagels for lunch, and one as an after dessert snack. We can go on. Guess what? My brother is alive for 20 yrs. He was just a 9 lb baby. OH, and she drank too, with him. Her second child...but still..
