Do You Encourage Your Child's Own Sense of Style?

In a recent episode of Brothers & Sisters, tweener Paige went shopping with grandma Nora and the two came home with what Sarah (Paige's mom) thought was a doozy of an outfit — a sparkly red mini. After much ado, Sarah compromised by buying her daughter a pair of leggings and matching jacket to tone down the dress. Do you censor what your children wear or let them express themselves?

I always reserve the right to veto. In clothing or anything else for that matter. Shopping is usually done together and things are approved before they are even brought home. All that being said, I do encourage our children to have their own sense of style, mixing clothing itmes for fun outfits etc. They are all just preapproved pieces, so there isn't a problem. It also helps that I have rather conservative children so there usually aren't any conflicts.

once it's home they're pretty much free to wear whatever they want, but i usually buy stuff and bring it home. my 7 year old has her own ideas about style that are more like what a cheap lookiing 13 year old would wear, so i try not to take her, lol. my 9 year old likes cocktail style dresses (which limited too/justice) actually sells, and that is also a "no".

As long as it is weather appropriate, safe, and everything that is supposed to be covered is covered, I wouldn't care.

I used to let my cousins' pick out their clothes. The only time I would say they couldn't wear something is if the weather was way too hot for jeans and sneakers and long sleeves or if it was too cold to wear a skort and short sleeves. Their mother buys clothes that she knows they'll like and that is appropriate. If it is inappropriate then the mother/father/guardian (whatever) shouldn't buy it in the first place. I liked that Sarah did that for Paige though. It was smart.

I let my 2.5 y/o pick her outfit out of two that I suggest. That's usually ok, but lately she wants to pick out her own outfit and we go through several. She's on her way to being such a diva...however, I let her wear whatever she likes for the most part...
