Do You Agree With Nicknames Based on Appearance?

From Fats to Freckle Face and Bones to Blondie, numerous children have been nicknamed based on their physical attributes. But as parents teaching our children not to take things at face value, does anyone believe in this practice anymore? While Slim and Old Blue Eyes can be taken as complimentary monikers, Chubs and Ginger are not necessarily flattering. What's your opinion?

We like to think that words do not matter but they do-think of the power bullies and teasers have. I was teased often because of the way I walked as a child. Kids can be very sensitive and the feelings linger.

My mom once called me "Dolly Parton" since I was thin and had big boobs. I actually felt awful when it happened since it wasn't as if it was my fault. My mom is tall and her entire family has big chests. However, I am an inch shorter than my mom, and was always skinner -- so a big chest is not what you expected to find on a girl like me. She said it like an insult. She never did it again, though. I would NEVER call a child a nickname that had to do with looks. That is so shallow. Give a nickname out of love, not to pinpoint a certain characteristic.

Of course it's not right to call a child "chubs" or something of that nature, but I have no problem with "blondie" or anything along those lines. It all depends on the child's sensitivity too. I am just under 5' and for years people have called me "shorty," or I have constantly been the subject of (good natured) short jokes. That didn't bother me at all. I would refrain from saying things like that, even if there was no harm meant by them, to a child that may take more offense to things like that.
