Divorced Parents Raising Their Children Under One Roof

Divorce is common in today's society, but due to the recent economy some parting parents are forced to stay under the same roof and continue to raise their children. The unusual living arrangement has its perks since both mom and dad continue to have ample time with their offspring, but it also can be awkward when one or both parties start dating. Would you be able to survive this type of situation?

I've stayed in my marriage for the last 14 years for my son's sake. We've have not had sex since 1995, we can afford a better standard of living if we stay together. I am out of the country most weeks with work so I'm only really 'home' at weekends. It's a lousy life but better than the alternative.

When my ex-husband and I decided we would divorce the decision was made nearly two months before we separated households due to the holidays. It was horrible. I was completely apathetic towards him or his emotions as I had been beaten down for two years and just done. Those two months were hell. I just can't imagine doing this. I also imagine this would be harder on the kids :-(

It all depends on the situation. If it was a mutual decision, I think it would be easier emotionally, but when there are kids involved, I just feel as though they need something cut and dry, a situation that won't give them hope of their parents getting back together. There are other options, such as renting, and discussing with the right people what you are going to do about your house. I know one couple who is doing this now. They have grown kids, got their own apartments in different cities, and still own a house which they just cannot get rid of -- but it's being taken care of as of now. If you can deal, if you can be mature, then I guess you do what you have to do. But for me, I just would rather not have to deal with it or put my kids through that.
