Did You Go Home From the Hospital Before Baby?

Seventy-seven percent of lilsugar readers planned for their exit from the hospital with a special outfit for their baby. But not all mamas are allowed to leave the hospital with their newborns as some lil ones are still in need of a doctor's care.

Did you have to leave your baby in the hospital?

They even tended to me, which I wouldn't had expected. But when I came in one day feeling like crap with mastitis one of the NICU nurses with out me even asking went and got me make-shift cold packs (diapers soaked in cold water..lol) to put on my swollen painful breasts. Angels all of them. :)

NICU nurses are incredible. I can only imagine what they see and deal with daily and yet they still make the parents feel more at ease, comfort them, etc.

I went home with my son after he was born. But we had to take him back 8 days later because he was so lethargic and barely eating. They took him right to the NICU and admitted him. After a series of tests they found that he had a blood infection. I had to leave him there for 2wks so he could get IV meds. It was really painful the first few days for my husband and I. But we went a few times a day, in the morning before my hubby went to work, when he got home from work, before bed and I went a few times in between for feedings during the day. The hardest part was taking him home, getting used to having him there, and then all of a sudden he was in the hospital. But I'll forever be grateful for those NICU nurses. They made a hard situation a little easier and saved our baby. :) The hospital has a "reunion" for NICU graduates every year so it was nice to go back and see them this year and they could see how much Milo had grown. *Sorry for the long winded post.

My son was stillborn and then revived, and I'm glad they allowed me to see him immediately. It would've been far more traumatic for me to not see him until he was "fine."

"GlowingMoon- that is such a crazy story! How bizarre that your mom would never get to see you. Now, they are so focused on ill newborns and preemies getting their mother's touch/voice. I can't imagine how terrified your mom must have felt." I was born overseas -- in Asia. Those hospitals have different rules, I guess. Well, words cannot describe how my Mom felt. She was a young mom (early 20's), and I was her firstborn. Even to this day (I'm in my 30's), my Mom still feels awful about what happened. The ordeal began with my Mom taking a bad spill. She took a misstep, and fell HARD. Her water broke immediately, and she was taken to the hospital. That was when she found out her baby (me in utero) had lost its heartbeat. My Mom became hysterical, an emergency C-section was ordered, and the medical staff heavily sedated her to calm her down, and wheeled her into the operation room. It was crazy. My Mom blames herself for that accidental misstep. Again, to this day, she feels very guilty for almost killing me. :)

MotoLinz, your story is exactly like mine. It was so hard but I tried not to cry because my parents and in-laws were there. My son stayed in NICU for 8 days. I came by from 8-11 am and 2-5 pm everyday, also my husband came several times too to drop breast milk. Everyday, I just sat there outside his room and looked at him through the glass window. It was horrible, my days were like hell. I also got into a big fight with my dad because he said I was overreacting about my son. Thank god it's all behind me.

My daughter spent a month in the NICU. In fact, she as born on October 1st and she just came home on November 1st. She wasn't premature, there were complications, but she's fine now. Leaving the hospital without my baby girl was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. And spending a month going back and forth to the hospital so I could spend as much time with her as possible was difficult and draining. But I had to bond with her, and I had to make sure she knew who her mommy was--my husband did the same thing, although he had to go back to work after ten days. And we wanted to make sure she had the best of care, although the nurses were wonderful, it wasn't an issue.

I was in the hospital for a day longer than my mother because I had a lot of complications... I had almost no heartbeat at all and it took them a good five minutes to get me breathing. Since my mom was induced on Tuesday night and gave birth Wednesday morning, she left the hospital Wednesday night, but they wanted to keep me to keep track of my vitals.

I don't have children, but I was in this situation as a newborn. I was a stillborn (born dead), but miraculously, the medical staff revived me. I was a full term baby. I was delivered via emergency c-section. My Mom turned out fine, and shortly afterwards, was released from the hospital. Apparently, my survival was uncertain, so I had to stay in the hospital for a month. Ironically, in the hospital, I was not allowed any visitors. The first time my Mom saw me was when I was released from the hospital -- 1 month old, no longer a newborn, thick head of hair, pink, glowing skin, with a clean bill of health. When I was delivered (a stillborn), the medical staff had whisked me away to tend to me, and my Mom never got to see me. In some ways, I think this was good, as I was lifeless body. That would have been overly traumatic for her.

I grew up knowing I had to be int he hospital for a couple of weeks after my mom was discharged and I never realized how impossibly difficult that must have been for her until I was told I might have to leave the hospital before my son was allowed to. I was a wreck when they had to take him from me and put him under the lights (which I knew in my head wasn't a big deal)- when I thought I might have to leave without him I was devastated. I was very lucky that my baby came home with me, but my heart goes out to those of you that did not have that luxury.

I understand they have good intentions. And I fully understand he could've stayed longer or never come home. But it still comes across as "stop whining and perk up!" I didn't yell at anyone for saying it, I just would politely excuse myself or end the phone call and then cry even harder. It's a very dismissive thing to say, good intentions or not.

I can't imagine. I was so freaked out that I was going to have to leave him there for his jaundice. We did get to take him home but had to put him on the billi blankets. While it was better than leaving him in the hospital it made trying to get the nursing thing going really difficult. I think people have good intentions when they say stuff like "well it could be worse". I don't think they realize that they are not helping and just being annoying.

I don't have any kids yet but my sister had her twin boys at 29 weeks and had to leave them in the hospital for two months. The worst part was she was so sick and almost died that she had to be rushed to Boston which is 1.5 hours from us, so she had a hard time seeing her babies everyday once she was released. I felt so bad.

Greggie: I had people say this to me too. Even my mom said it when I called to tell her. We had no family in town, so it felt incredibly lonely going home. She came home a week later, but it was the longest week of my life! And they were prob. right that it could have been worse, but at the moment, it doesn't feel like anything could be worse and this is hardly a helpful statement.

With my daughters they came home with me my son stayed in the hospital for almost a month then returned to the hospital at two monthss for almost a month so it was harder with him to give him up twice
