Teen Mom: Should Baby's Biological Parents Stay Together?

Teen parents are just kids themselves so do the rules change when it comes to couples calling it quits? Forty percent of LilSugar readers said they'd do everything to stay with their child's father, but for some young parents their relationships were on the rocks before the little pink line appeared on the pregnancy test. In last night's episode of Teen Mom, the bonds between Catelynn and Tyler and Amber and Gary were strained while Ryan and Maci dated new people. What's your opinion?

Teen parents should do whatever works, same is in any relationship.

My parents split up last year after nearly 20 years of marriage. When I was about 8 they discussed divorce but decided to stay together because they thought it would be best for my brother and I. I don't think it was. They would fight pretty often and I knew my parents weren't in love with each other anymore. When they split up last year it was hard to deal with but now I can honestly say it was the best for all of us. I don't think parents should ever stay together only for the kids.

Staying with someone for your kid? Sounds like a recipe for disaster... I'm yet to see the wisdom in kids having kids, and this is a prime example of why.

Miss leanne has the perfect point. It's all about the example you're setting. Her father is the kind of man I would like her to marry someday, and our relationship is something I wish she gets to experience in her life. So, no, staying together for the kids can be toxic for the kids!

I agree with everyone else. It's definitely unhealthy for a child to grow up around a dysfunctional couple. The last thing you could want is for them to think it's normal and have the same sort of relationship when they're older.

Well I certainly wasn't married or planning on having a kid when I got knocked up... I guess I haven't decided if I'm the marrying type or not yet. It depends relationship to relationship. This really isn't a yes or no question.

You should not be staying in a marriage for your kids. But your marriage/relationship should be stable enough that divorce/splitting up isn't really an issue before you bring kids into the mix. I honestly think you should be married or have plans to be married before you have a kid. (Doesn't apply if you're the not marrying type.) But you should be together and plan on being together for awhile. Kids can ruin relationships - you need to build it up and fortify before bringing home baby.

I think this is a stupid question to direct ONLY at teens. I had my kids at 18 and 19, and thankfully I am still with their father and we're happy. However, directing that question specifically at the teenagers is stupid because I'm sure married couples that are strained and then have a baby go through this and they're supposed to be "grown up" right? If they're not happy and they're fighting all the time that's more unhealthy than splitting up and co-parenting successfully and raising a well-adjusted child or children. This decision has nothing to do with being "grown up" and everything to do with the nature of the situation.

From going up and having my parents split it was much better to have them be apart. they were always fighting and never in a good mood. it was better to have them be happy and apart. Better for them and better for my siblings and my self.

I'm a single mother of 2 boys. I am 23 years old , and had my first son right after I turned 17, and his brother after I turned 19. Their father and I are no longer together, and my kids are not suffering at all from not having their dad around. So from experience I think if the parents are not healthy together then the babies should be with whom ever can care for them best, but excluding the parent (who does not care for the child mainly) is wrong if you do it solely out of spite. I also 100% agree with Diamond staying together just for the kids is just very unhealthy and shouldn't be done either.
