Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that is first diagnosed when a woman becomes pregnant. Basically, it means that a woman's blood sugar levels become elevated. Often this form of diabetes can be controlled through a healthy diet, exercise, and weight management and subsides after pregnancy, but some women require insulin or other medications to control it. Since there are essentially no symptoms of GD, most women undergo a glucose-screening test between 24 and 28 weeks.
