Who Are Your Children's Godparents?

Godparents are usually different from guardians in that the godparents are often the best friends or closest family members of the parents.

While guardians are entrusted to raise the child if something happens to the parents, godparents have the fun job of showing up at birthday parties and giving special gifts.

Kimmba, not all our godparents are Catholic either. As long as one is, we fulfill the requirement. And I know people like my sister, who isn't Catholic, will be more trustworthy in respecting our wishes and carrying out the education if need be.

My DD's godparents are a couple of friends of both me and DH. they are both very worldly and love reading about every religion. I thought they would be fitting as they have knowledge about many of the worlds religions

for my first a priest and my mothers bff since kindergarten. for my second dh's brother and a family friend of 20 years. for #3 dh's uncle and a good friend of mine. none of them have done ANYTHING other than acknowledge baptism and communion. :) ???

My husband and I had a very difficult time choosing Godparents for our children. I am not Catholic and my husband is. We felt it was very important to choose people to fill these roles that were as close to us in personality and conviction as they could be. With our 3 year old son we chose my brother-in-law and my best friend, both of which are Catholic. We are having our 3 month old daughter baptized in April and have decided to ask the husband of my son's Godmother and another very close friend to be godparents. Our daughter's Godfather will not be Catholic (although he is married to one)and her Godmother is. We are very happy that two of our children's Godparents are married to each other, just in case something were to happen. While they may not be related to either of us, they are the most like us in beliefs and parenting styles than any of our blood relatives. I would feel very comfortable letting them shape our children in the future.While I am not Catholic, I feel that my children should be raised in one religion. We were married in the Catholic faith and belong to a Catholic parish, so there is no reason to not have that continue through with our children.

My oldest son's godparents are my husbands best friend and his wife. My second son's are my aunt and uncle. My newest baby hasn't been baptized yet and we haven't picked his godparents, but it will probably be my husbands sister and someone else. Like Greggie, we are Catholic so it is a really big deal to us so we have to choose wisely.

I can't vote, I qualify under many of the categories. My first son's godparents are my sister, my father, and my husband's brother. Second son's are my mother and husband's brother. Third child, my father-in-law, my husband's brother, and my best friend. They have much more than "fun" stuff like birthday parties and gifts, though. They take on the commitment of helping oversee child's religious education and being role models. And if something were to happen to us, it's up to them to continue the religious education/Catholic upbringing.
