BabySugar Diaries: the Limits of a Lovey

Children's security blankets or loveys come in all shapes and sizes. From the standard blanket to a stuffed animal or pillowcase that helps a lil one feel safe during stressful times. While some tots only need their lovey to fall asleep, others keep them within arms reach throughout the day.

Suri Cruise left a five-star New York City restaurant the other night with her arms full of cuddly stuffed animals and that got me thinking. In my family, my son knows that his favorite stuffed animal is not allowed outside of the home unless we are going on a trip. Several friends have also told me about they have restrictions on their children's blankets. Do you put limits on where your kid can carry their lovey?

neither do mine.... wonder if it has to do with cosleeping instead of the kid sleeping alone in a crib?

None of my kids have a lovey.

Our 2 year old is allowed to take her boo bear (bear head on a small blanket) out of the house. She leaves it in the car when we get out, unless we are visiting family. The last thing we want to do is loose it (no one would sleep until it's found).

for some reason, my 2 1/2 y-o daughter never got attached to a "lovey" or blanket...She has a teddy bear that was my hubby's when he was little and she sleeps with it every night, but it doesn't leave the crib. She will usually take a baby doll with her when we go places but it's not the same one each time. I've worried b/c she didn't find a lovey, but then my Mom told me I never had one either.

If we're going to a place where he has to be quiet and sit for a long time, like a restaurant, I'll let him take something. I think it's unfair for us to expect a 4 year old to sit at dinner for 2 hours because hubby and I want to go out. I don't let him take his blanket, however. I did when he was younger, like Miss Sushi, but at 4 I don't think he needs his 'gee' at the table anymore. (I always called it a blankie and he had a hard time saying it, so it became gee)

I don't, within reason. My daughter is attached to her oversized flannel receiving blankets, and I let her bring one with her. She can't have more then one, and she has to carry it. She's 2, and I don't see the harm in having a blanket or toys with her. Chances are without a serious underlying problem, they are going to give them up on their own before it's a problem, and they will be left home when the child feels confident to do so. I also have her pack her toddler sized backpack with toys each time we go somewhere. It adds to her responsibility in helping her get ready, and since I have no childcare whatsoever, she plays with the toys when we go somewhere that will have wait time.
