I think it has to do with a huge number of factors, but mostly because of what we eat, and the unhealthy body that follows. There are a TON of things we deal with as a direct result of factory farming and processed foods. The food packaging, the hormones in meat and dairy, and the fact that nearly everything we eat is loaded with chemicals and high fructose corn syrup. Most people my age have no idea that you can create meals that don't come out of boxes. I had a friend the other day that was a little shocked that you could use flour and cocoa to make brownies. We need stronger enforcement regarding our food quality, ESPECIALLY in schools.

@lickety split: I started my period at 10 as did my mom. I'm now 39, so this was 30 years ago. I think that it's important to remember that genetics do play a role in the onset of puberty, and that even sisters can have different puberty genes (not sure that's a real term, hope you know what I mean!). Having said that, as much as I possibly can I feed my daughter only foods that are free of hormones. My uncle said years ago (I wasn't even a teenager when he said this) that he felt hormones in food were playing a part in earlier onsets of puberty. That has always stuck with me.

My now 12 year old daughter started her period at 9 years 9 months. That, I think, is from the super strong drugs she takes. She has severe autism and had been on risperidal for over 5 years by this time. Her next closest sib is a sister, 12 months, 4 days younger. At 11 years 7 months she just started to show breast development. I think poison in the environment are pushing puberty forward. But what can you do?
