Candy Alternatives Found in My Tot's Trick-or-Treat Bag

The night of fright has passed, but while sorting through my kid's candy, I unearthed a couple of fun and inexpensive, non-candy items that I'll keep in mind while passing out party bags in the months ahead.

Jingle Bell Spider — a toy spider crafted from jingle bells, beads and ribbon that children can enjoy all year.
Multi-color retractable pen key-chain — the small pens are right up a lil artist's alley as they can hook the writing utensil to their backpack and not worry about toting their pencil pouch.
Mini-packs of pretzels — the whole wheat treat keeps kids snacking on something other than candy.
Placemat — the inexpensive mats keep children happy, tables clean and can be used again and again.
Festive cup — youngsters can use them for drinking or for storing their treasures.
Coloring book — provides hours of tot entertainment and artistic expression.

I gave out some cute little notebooks and pens i had put aside for xmas stockings! Luckily i only had a few children stop by. Last year i had none so i didn't bother getting any candy in this year. I think more and more kids are going out trick or treating here (Australia) each year.

I give play-doh every year. We ran out and had to get some candy. all in all over 200 kids later I have 5 pieces of candy left.

I don't have any kids but think that the alternatives are a good idea. Little toys are a "treat" for kids as well and they balance out the bag full of candy.

my mom gave out halloween colored mini play-doh! I kept a black one to play with :D

they got stencils, pencils and stickers!

Stickers, pencils, erasers, crayons, lots of mini-bags of pretzels and crackers. Even some organic granola bars and fruit leather. It balanced out the house that gave away cotton candy !

I actually went trick or treating- at 18! :O - and I was given the option at one house to pick m&m's or tattoos. Another house gave out Kool-Aid jammers and a couple people gave us little bags of pretzels, but other than that, it was just candy.

My son and nephew got jack-o-lantern pencils and mini writing pads.

My son got a small apple paired with a piece of chocolate from a neighbor. At the end of the night, we allowed him to pick one thing from his bag - and he chose the apple!! I was so happy (and proud!).

Nope. Just 100% pure candy. And I really should stop eating it ;-)
