Parents tell children not to take candy from strangers, yet they buy breast milk for their babies on the Internet.
Women peddling the liquid gold for up to $4 an ounce plus shipping and handling aren't that hard to find online.
One supplier priced her milk at $2 an ounce in a recent post on Craigslist. It said:
So weird to be offering my breastmilk but i figure if it can help people and make a little extra side money then it's worth it. I am a 31 year old (Chinese if it matters) very healthy/non-smoker/non-drinker. Had our first baby a little over 3 weeks ago and i have been storing bag after bag of breastmilk in the freezer. I save them the in Lansinoh breast milk storage bags. I have no infectious diseases or any kind of health concerns to worry about. I am currently still taking my Prenatal Vitamins and Expecta.
Mamas who want their tots to reap the rewards of breast milk, but can't produce enough and those who have adopted are two types of potential buyers.
Though there are milk banks that regulate milk quality and test donors for viruses, a week's worth of liquid can cost around $700. So some parents surf the web seeking a better deal and trust complete strangers in order to secure the goods.

1Some things should not be sold online. But I'm curious to know why so many mom's do it.

4I remember hearing people talk about this in a mommy's group thing once. Some of them seemed to think it was a good way to stop wasting all the excess breastmilk seeping out all over their sheets and crowding their freezers and at the same time help out some children who would be otherwise getting formula.
I think it's kind of bizarre because a lot of the benefits of breastmilk require actual contact between baby and mom - especially antibody benefits, etc...
But, I have heard of women donating excess breastmilk to NICU units and that seems like a very good thing.

6On ABC News not too long ago, I heard about a group doing this internationally. They pumped here and the milk was shipped to third-world countries. It seemed like it was becoming more and more popular, but I really don't remember details.
7I think it is fantastic for those in need, but not on the internet! yuck, lmao. if i was in need or wanted to truely help people then I would donate to some type of clinic or hospital.

12I wouldn't it trust it from just any stranger, but I think it's totally worth doing through a milk bank. There are proven health benefits with breastmilk as opposed to formula, and I would imagine a lot of children could really benefit from it. Personally, I was able to breastfeed my daughter, so I can't say for sure if I would or wouldn't ever do this.
13I'm sorry but Craigslist is a place to find free furniture, look for an apartment, or buy tickets to a ball game........not buy your child breast milk from some random stranger who says they're clean.
14I've been desperate enough to think about it. I just couldn't produce milk and hated so much giving my baby formula. I'd had a day of donated milk at the hospital, and all the hospital staff kept warning me that I really needed to produce breast milk quickly and how important it was. My baby refused the breast, and I pumped for about 6-8 hours a day, and produced next to nothing. If it had been from a source I could have trusted, I'd have paid anything! But who buys body fluids online?
15I'd never buy any online or sell any online... Seriously this is crazy!
16If I had excess I'd probably donate to the hospital. But I can't even imagine selling it online... people would think I was crazy! And besides that, I am not going to trust some random person on the internet so why would I expect anyone to trust me?
I knew someone that said when her child was first born he was sick, her milk hadn't come in yet and they wanted to feed him formula so she let her sister nurse him. While it was her sister and all it just seemed weird. Then again I don't have any sisters so maybe I would feel differently if I did.
17i don't think that any mother takes lightly what they feed their child. If a mother is buying milk from another mother online i'm sure that she is taking the necessary precautions to make sure that the milk is safe. have any of you considered that idea? there are ways to make the online process of buying less anonymous and safe. milk banks make money off of the milk that mothers donate so why shouldn't a mother earn a little for the milk she is producing. it seems that everyone here is assuming that the mothers who are selling their milk online are disease infested capitalist who want to spread their dangerous milk to helpless babies. this is limited thinking. i would consider selling my milk online to a family in need for a much smaller price than milk banks and believe it or not i have no diseases, i am a very healthy person and have a baby that is thriving off the milk i produce. sharing milk doesn't necessarily endanger babies, milk sharing has been happening since motherhood began and the internet is just a new way to do it. i suggest people take a moment to consider that most mothers out there take incredible precautions to make sure they are producing good milk for their children, and the excess they produce could help a family without the funds to buy from milk banks.

23I find it hilarious that people think its disgusting to drink breast milk. Yet will happily drink cancerous milk from cows that have just as much as diseases as humans do.
