The last thing on many expectant mamas' minds is doing the deed, but Kate Hudson recently told February's Elle her feelings on the importance of sex in a relationship — even while pregnant. She said:

People think that you can put your sexual life on hold, but you have to find time for it. Without that relationship, our family is broken. My mom really implanted that in me when I was pregnant.

Many of us used sex in hopes of inducing labor at home, but did you place an emphasis on getting physical with your partner while you were pregnant to keep the spark alive?

I had to hold my breath around my husband for the majority of the pregnancy because just a slight whiff of his deodorant would send me hovering over the toilet. Needless to say, sex was NEVER on my mind. Trying to survive each single pregnant day was its own full time job.

this is such a strange quote. i also remember her being quoted as saying that she wouldn't mind if her husband was with another woman as long as she didn't have to know about it...or something along those lines. so clearly, she operates under a different set of rules. as for sex during pregnancy, we do what we can.

Not that it applies since she's not married anymore, but I wonder if an accident that robbed him of his ability to have sex would've made her leave. After all, without that relationship, their marriage would be "broken."

The last time I was pregnant, I had a strong erotic drive thought the nine months (which some say can happen when you carry a boy because of the testosteron produced), but my husband did not feel like having sex after a certain period because he was afraid he would hurt me or the baby. Kate may have been quoted out of context, but I feel sorry for her if the image she has of men is that their sex drive overrides all other feelings. True, many men can probably feel a bit frustrated with the lack of sex both during and after the pregnancy, and it is important to get back on track some months after the baby is born, but at the same time, men's focus also changes when one expects a child. This time around, I have been throwing up every day for the first three months, and my husband would not dream of approaching me sexually right now. His concern is for my well-being, and we enjoy physical closeness without sex.

I've never been in the position that this is about, but I think that no relationship should be based solely on the amount of sex you have. That's what the comment sounds like to me. That your relationship is nill if you don't have sex. Yes it is important but everyone goes through dry spells (we have and no kids yet) but our relationship is more than just getting busy in the sack. And we weren't a "broken family" when we went through those dry spells. My mom and I talk about sex and while it was weird when we starting talking about it and it is occasionally now I don't really have a problem with it. We just don't go in to details lol :)

I've had many conversations with my mom about sex. Fortunately her advice is along the lines of "You both know what's best" and not "Have sex to keep him happy."

that comment makes me laugh a little. should a divorced person REALLY be giving advice on keeping a marriage together? i honestly don't remember my sex life when i was pregnant. but we're still married nearly 8 years after our 3rd child was born. so maybe the entire focus of your family doesn't have to be on sex? just a thought.
