The Office: Do You Bring Your Child to Work?

Going to work with mom or dad used to be a big deal, but today lots of parents have flex hours, on-site childcare or the ability to work from home. A parent "heading off to work" has new meaning. Still there are curious kids that like to head downtown, meet mommy's co-workers or see where she spends a portion of her time. Do you take your tyke to the office on occasion?

While I don't have kids now, if I still have my same job when I do, I will definitely bring them. But, I work in a child care! So it's a little different.

Jen, that sounds so cool! My nephew (who is 4) would love that! His mom is a nurse, but she doesn't take him there because it's an hour drive and they're never around the area when she's not working... I am studying to be a teacher, so I will probably bring her to work one day just to show her what I'm doing all day...

I agree, snarkypants. I certainly mind -- I actually enjoy it! -- when my coworkers bring their kids in for a short amount of time for a visit. I did, however, have one coworker that brought her kids in a few times a week (all day). It's a legal office - it's not a place for children.

Oh, man, Jen Girl, my 2 1/5 year old son would love you! :) He is sooo into ambulances, fire trucks, and police right now. He even walks around singing this "911" song he learned on his fire truck video. LOL!

my co-worker brings his little brat to work. nothing ruins productivity like a little one screaming her head off, throwing staplers, breaking the paper shredder (WTF), and coloring all over important documents! she is an absolute terror! an office is not the place for an uncontrollable child. visits are one thing, but it's not a day care.

I work in an ambulance station. Of course I bring my daughter to work! There are ambulances there, and that's just super cool! There are also uniformed EMTs, paramedics, and police around the station all the time, so she can recognize and become comfortable with helpers. I don't take her to work when I'm on air (I'm a dispatcher); I need to concentrate on my radios and my phones, and having a three year old around isn't conducive to concentrating at all. I take her in when I pick up my check, or when we're in the area and have a little time to kill. Sometimes, a crew just coming on or off shift will let her "drive" the ambulance (sit in the driver's seat and press buttons) and check out all the stuff in the back.

I don't work, but I voted yes for my husband, who loves us coming to visit him at work. We'll stop by every few months and meet him for lunch and walk around and visit with his co-workers. When I was pregnant with my son, some of the nurses and other doctors (husband is a doctor) even threw us a shower, so they were particularly invested in his birth and love to see how much he is growing. Plus, we dealt with infertility, so they have always been so happy for us. We just recently took the new baby to meet everyone and had to stop by every office and clinic area. They have always been very supportive, so it was fun for all of us!
