My mom hated the taste of licorice when she was pregnant. And when I was expecting, I disliked mint. While food aversions and other pregnancy factors can vary from generation to generation, one thing seems to be inherited – breech positioning.

A breeched baby is one that is positioned with the head–up and feet down. A Norwegian study found:

Men and women who had themselves been delivered in breech position had more than twice the risk of delivering their own first babies in the same way.

Women who carry breech babies often try to "turn" the baby through various methods in hopes of a traditional "head first" birth. However, being aware of their own birth position may provide parents with information on how to deal with their own birth plans.

faerymagick - You are so right. My older daughter was breech. My ob-gyn pushed on the top of my bump while her partner pushed the opposite way on the bottom to try to get her to turn. She wasn't having any of it and I wound up having a c-section. It was very painful and I cried like the little girl I am.

from what I have heard a "version" where they manually try to turn the baby...can be very uncomfortable and downright painful. I think I would opt for a c section!

Interesting. But I heard there are things you can try to get the baby to move.

My daughter was bum first. I have no idea if I was a breech baby though. Butterflyrouge, my mother asked the doctor to tie her tubes after my sister's cesarean birth - she had five kids already. He asked my father's permission before doing it. :oy:

Ha. I was my mom's first, and I was a "frank breech"- I was folded in half and came out bum first. And no, my mom never had a c-section. When they realized what was going on with my birth, the doctors/nurses asked my DAD if HE wanted my mom to have a c-section, which he didn't- not that he understood anything about breech deliveries. What can I say, it was the 70's. I'm glad to know of the increased risk for my kids to be positioned like that.

oh no! i was breech. mom had a c-section. i really want to avoid a c-section if medically possible. hopefully this one (my first) won't be breech!

I didn't know that. I thought it was just chance. I don't know of anyone in my very large family who was born breech.

Interesting. If treatments are performed early enough acupuncture has a high success rate in turning babies--chiropractic, too. I would definitely help to have some advance notice.

Hmmm I was born head first and my mom's other 3 kids were head first too. Now I just have to find out about my s/o. Hopefully this genetics thing will hold out and I'll have mine head first.
