The cesarean section rate in America increases every year with the current rate hovering around 31 percent. Whether done for medical reasons or otherwise, a C-section is a birth performed via abdominal surgery. The surgery usually involves an epidural or spinal form of anesthesia that numbs the body from the chest down, allowing the mother to remain awake throughout the procedure. To complete the C-section, the surgeon cuts into the lower stomach area, through muscle and then into the uterus to reach and remove the baby.
