There's nothing more common than a parent crying at their kiddo's preschool graduation or wedding. Milestones can be a lot for mom or pop to handle, but does the unbridled sentiment turn attention from the child to the parent? Bill Clinton thinks so. And the former president doesn't plan to tear up as he walks Chelsea down the aisle later this month. He told CNN:

I am going to try not to cry because this isn't about me, it's about her. And if I am crying then it becomes partly about me.

I think in most cases it is fine for the parents to cry. But if they are over the top then it does take away from the child. Last year at my friends high school graduation her mom started crying. it was so bad that my friends dad, grandparents, and brother were too busy calming her down that they missed seeing my friend walk and get her diploma.

i think Bill Clinton was speaking about himself specifically and not all parents participating in a tearjerker moment. becasue he is who is is, people will automatically jump all over "Bill Clinton sheds tears giving daughter away" and the attention will effectively be taken off of Chelsea. Unless a parent is screaming down the aisle its generally okay for parents to cry and it wont affect the childs moment at all. But we all dont have Bill CLinton for a dad

Sobbing uncontrollably, yes they would certainly take some spotlight. But I think tears in the eyes is not inapropriate, and frankly, as the bride who is supposed to be the centre of attention, I think I'd feel more special if my dad shed a tear!
