Babe Is Born, Is It OK to Say You Shouldn't Have Had Sex?

Teen mama Bristol Palin is promoting abstinence for the Candie's Foundation. The mom to five-month-old son Tripp spoke out about why girls should wait to have sex on Good Morning America in honor of today being National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. After saying she wished she had waited, she added:

"My son is a blessing. He's the best thing that ever happened to me. He's the love of my life but I do wish that years from now I could have had the same son."

What's your opinion on this statement?

She's only doing this abstinence campaign because of pressure to help her mother's political career. She was quoted months ago saying that abstinence-only education doesn't work because "it's not realistic at all."

Perhaps if Bristol had learned about SAFE SEX at home she wouldn't have ended up pregnant at 17....sex does not necessarily equal babies, and she is a stunning example of the failure of abstinence-only sex education. /rant.

mstrauss, Bristol is 18 going on 19, so I personally don't consider her a "young girl". I think she's at the age where abstinence starts to become even less realistic, so it's totally appropriate for her to advocate safe sex.

At her age, she should NOT be promoting safe sex. While I agree that it is important to promote safe sex because telling someone not to have sex doesn't work very well all the time, a young girl like Bristol should be promoting no sex!

I saw a similar interview on another morning show. I admire that she loves her son and doesn't seem him as a mistake. At the same time, she's the spokesperson for a new teen pregnancy prevention campaign and I think the things she was saying didn't truly match that message.

sex does not mean pregnancy/baby. I don't think it is wrong for people to have sex if they are both ready for it, but they should be smart enough to have safe sex.

so..does this mean a few years down the road she would have wanted to be with levi..technically that is the only way she could still have the same son. she also said that she did not want to be a celb..then get off out from in front of the cameras and take are of you kid!! and let you're baby's father see him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with fleurary. She has money and her family's support - two things many (most) teen mothers do not have. I wish should would advocate SAFE SEX.

i do agree with chouette,but like fleurfairy said it might encourage girls to get pregnant thinking that they'll have it easy as she does with a financially and emotionally supporting family.

To be honest, I think that her statements might make teen girls even more encouraged to get pregnant. She's happy, she loves her son, etc. But she's lucky she has a family that is able to support her financially and emotionally.

I agree with the above posters. I voted yes, but I also believe the no description is right. By saying you should have waited doesn't mean that you don't cherish/love your child--its honestly how you feel and its the truth about the situation. But also at the same time, you accept what has happened and you move on.

I agree with Chouette4u. Those are poor choices to choose between. I think it's OK to be honest and admit that while you love your child you wish you could have lived your own life a while longer. But does that equate to "shouldn't have had sex"? Instead it should be "shouldn't have had UNPROTECTED sex"?Although I recognize that teenagers may have a higher instance of using birth control wrong, leading to higher chance of its failure, and in that case maybe it would have been better to NOT have sex at all.

I agree. My sister had her first child at 17, and she has always said she wished she had waited, but wouldn't trade her daughter for anything. It's honesty. I bet MANY teen mothers feel the same way...

I don't think her statement is saying that she doesn't accept everything that has happened. She's just acknowledging that it might have been ideal if she hadn't had a baby until she was older.
