Childcare is Costly: How Much Do You Spend Each Year?

Parenting comes with a price tag! When mom and dad can't be with their child, someone else fills their shoes. Some families have grandparents or neighbors that step in, and others have to hire help or find a service to care for their kiddos. How much do you spend on nannies, babysitters, daycare centers, afterschool programs or other forms of childcare each year?

I clean houses and I get $12 where a nanny gets $10. She looks over my shoulder when I pick up my pay and comments that I get more than her. She has left the baby less than two years old home alone and she spends all day on the phone. This is not just when the baby is sleeping. When the baby is up, she ignores her and when I'm there, I'm cleaning and watching the baby and talking to her and teaching her words. You get what you pay for. If you pay for someone who doesn't speak English then they can't sit and teach your kids words, letters and numbers. I'm really scared if I have kids. I think I would try to hire two college girls and have them split the schedule. I've seen first hand that a "nanny" isn't going to do a good job just because she has already had her own children. I bet that nanny never left her own baby home alone. I never told the mother, either. I'm staying out of it. She thinks the nanny's great, I'm not bursting her bubble. For what? To make myself look bad?

I am sorry but, I do not think that making 12.50 an hour as a nanny is alot of money. If you don't want to pay for childcare, then stay home, work evenings, trade childcare with your partner. How much do you want to pay 2.00 per hour then move to a third world country. Please be reasonable, these people are raising your children.

I have almost 3-yr twins. The first 18 months in daycare was $2000 a month (and that was with a corporate discount). Thankfully, the cost is slowly creeping down, little by little, every September. It helps that we are also taking advantage of the dependent care accounts through our work benefits - that $5000 helps defray about 20% of the cost and it lowers our net income.

Childcare is so expensive!!! I am looking forward to my son switching to nursery school next year. The nanny costs 25k+ and school will cost around 6k. What a difference. Even with 2 kids in school (which will be happening soon enough), I will still be paying less than I pay my nanny now!
