American Apparel Maternity: Ga Ga or Gag?

Not all expecting mamas are willing to surrender their closet to A Pea in the Pod. Fashion forward ladies can decorate themselves and their bump with American Apparel's edgy and funky maternity clothes — even if the brand is simply labeling belly friendly clothes already in production as "maternity." Regardless, one mama-to-be's dream may be another's worst nightmare. Neon spandex unitard, anyone? So tell us, does the hipster take on pregnancy apparel appeal to you?

I was just on AA's "maternity" page, which had a bunch of non-pregnant women wearing AA clothes on it. I called AA to see if they have maternity clothing I could shop for online and was told that they "don't have pregnant women modelling their maternity clothes" - hm, why would anyone do that??... Then she added that they weren't *really* maternity clothes, just clothing that they "had selected" for their fabric or cut that "would work" for maternity. Which makes me wonder if anyone at AA has ever been pregnant or has ever known anyone who was pregnant. Without extra fabric, no amount of 'stretch fabric' is going to cover my belly without being binding, at best - I could go on - like about how just getting a bigger size means it's big and baggy evertwhere else *except* the belly, which is also useless. That was the stupidest things I've ever heard. Get a maternity line or don't AA - don't sell your regular clothes with the claim that they'll work on pregnant women, too. Kind of amazingly dumb.

If this is "fashion forward" and "edgy and funky," then I am more than happy to be out of fashion and boring. It's better than looking like a reject from the 80s. And it wouldn't even have been all that attractive in the 80s. Wow.

In my opinion, most of these clothes are very ugly and unflattering and no one should wear them anyways, but everyone has their own style and right to it, so if you like it, enjoy. I, however, wouldn't be caught dead in most of it.
