Most moms worry about the pain of childbirth, but the real surprise comes with its aftermath. Before having my daughter, I heard a rumor that you had to sit on an ice ring after having your baby.
So I wasn't too startled and actually welcomed the ice pack the nurse gave me in the postpartum room. If you want to see what happened, read more.
While it did wonders for the swelling, the packs and pads soaking up blood had to be switched out often. This can be a bit tricky when you're completely exhausted and have had an epidural.
By the time I delivered my son a couple of years later, the savvy nurses had come up with a new solution. They took newborn diapers, slit the inside lining and filled it with crushed ice. Absorbent and cold, it was a new mom's heaven.
If you're headed to the hospital, it doesn't hurt to ask if they have any.

LOL! This story is all too familiar. Once you've given birth and have to use ice packs, gigantic pads, water bottles, etc....you have no shame. It's all about what works and what's comfortable
1Oh lord! I have a lot to look forward to in April!
2The huge pads are hilarious. I used them for more than a week and am now just wearing regular maxi pads. Two weeks out and I'm still bleeding and from what I understand will continue to bleed for awhile. And you do feel no shame after birth. On one occasion after breastfeeding in the hospital, I stood up and blood ran down my legs and my poor husband had to run and get me towels. The giant pads weren't even enough!
3Okay, this is realization week for the girls who haven't given birth yet...stuff you don't think about: puking, gauze sewn into you, ice diapers!!!
4I wish the hospital had these for me!
And Schnappy is right on, after the whole birth process, all modesty goes riiiight out the window. My two examples: I had an epidural, so the nurses had to help me use the bathroom for a couple hours after. They usually have you go pretty soon after giving birth. I could barely walk...the last thing I wanted to do was pee. My favorite was the lactation consultant...she would walk in and tell me to whip out the boob - no matter who was in the room with me. My father-in-law turned 6 shades of red the day he was there
5I'm with aembry! All I can say is "wow". I had no idea!
6When I gave birth the first time the nurses gave me these ice packs that were wonderful: Take a maxi pad, soak it in water and then roll them and freeze them. Wonderful ice pack, used it the second time too, but this diaper idea seems even better!
7Okay wow! Nobody said anything about uncontrollable bleeding! Why didn't anybody tell me? Now I am too scared to have kids...
8Oh wow!!! Love that idea!
And Vinnie, I'm due in April too! At the end of the month though, so it's a toss up whether he'll actually appear in April or wait until May.
9aembry and blondelawyer - I had no idea about these things until they happened. And, vcastellanos — these lil surprises are crazy, but the baby makes up for everything!
10Had my little guy on the 9th and the nurse whipped up one of those ice packs for me. I thought it was quite brilliant.
vcastellanos- it's just like having a long period, just really heavy for a bit up front.
11All shame definitely goes out the window!!
My daughter had trouble latching on in breastfeeding and every single nurse that came on duty was pulling out my boob. You go to the bathroom on the delivery table(I couldn't tell but confirmed it with hubby). My bleeding lasted for about 6 weeks. It is all very crazy. It is a wonder that people have more than one child.
12I totally agree about losing all shame and modesty. First you are half naked in front of strangers who all staring at your privates while you push out a baby, then nurses have to help you to the bathroom and clean up all the blood that gushed out as soon as you stand up. Not to mention the rest of the time in the hospital having nurses checking your underwear constantly to see how much you are bleeding and lactation consultants and other random people helping you breastfeed. I was never embarrassed during my annual exam again!
13Macgirl — Congratulations on your new baby!
14Thanks! He is awesome
I'll have to add my kids to my profile
15Oh my goodness. What a story
Thanks for posting.
16Macgirl!!! Congrats!!!
And I feel cheated-- no ice packs were offered to me.
17My hospital uses maxi pads soaked in witch hazel and then frozen - same great icy feeling but the witch hazel is a natural astringent and helps keep swelling down - I even make them at home when I come home from the hospital, they are life savers!!
18OMG, maybe I don't want a VBAC afterall! The c-section was no picnic, but this sounds a lot worse.
19I agree, two babies later, nobody tells you the little details of chlldbirth, I had my second son on 14 Dec and only stopped bleeding last week, that is 6 weeks. The ice packs sound great, I had no idea!
20Omg! I thought those ice packs were the best thing on earth.
21Hello!
22I'm from Brazil, we don't have this ice packs here. Could you tell me the brand name of this product?
I would like to know and have more informations.
Thanks,
Ana
