Kiddie Catwalk: Would You Let Your Child Model?

When it comes to letting lil ones strike a professional pose, parents tend to have a difference of opinion. Some encourage their children to cheese it up in front of the camera while others shun it. And, then there are the lil lookers that just sort of fall into jobs.

I am always telling my friends to model their kids because some of them are just so darn cute, but the truth of it, as I understand from people who have tried, is it's a whole lot of driving around and waiting for very little money unless the kid gets a major campaign. Also the reality is there are A LOT of very very cute kids out there so every audition is FULL of adorable precocious kids. One caveat- multiracial kids tend to do VERY well in print and commercials.

When I have children, I don't think I would push them into modelling, I don't want to be the next Dina Lohan

My daughter does model. She has also gotten a role in a movie as a result of her modeling, with a really nice paycheck.

CJaneTyp is correct though. The industry tends to use the same handful of kids over and over again despite there being a ton of really cute kids. Some mutiracial kids do well in print and commercials, but in the grand scheme of things they still do not get as much exposure as caucasian children. Some clients will not use non-white kids and others that are required to fill an ethnic qouta will only use 1 maybe 2 spots. One non-white spot can be filled by any ethnicity child and alot of times they will pick an Asian child over a multi-racial child. It tends to go in seasons with what type of kid they are looking for.

I wouldn't- I think it's too much pressure. I'd rather my kids just have the freedom to be kids.

Push them into it, no. But if it fell into our laps, I doubt I'd say no. Not that the chances of that are very high.

I wouldn't shun it. But I would definately yank my kid out of there ASAP if I saw bad behavior (on anyone's part- kids, moms, agents, etc) coming from it. Or if my kid obviously didn't like it anymore.

umm, it would depend. a small local gig would be fine, probably nothing else even if they really wanted to do it.

I wouldn't want to put all that pressure on my kids. all the let downs if you don't get the job or don't do well at an audition. it's too much stress for most adults to bear, let alone a young child.

I don't know. My daughter wants to model but she already is obsessing over her weight. She's only 6 so i don't want to put her into something that makes her worry even more. When she gets older, maybe.

I don't think I'd seek it out. But if an opportunity arose I don't know that I'd say No.

Maybe little things. I did it when I was younger, just locally. I had fun and got to wear pretty dresses!

It would be OK once in a while, but not if it was interfering with our lifestyle or his being a child.

After reading some of the comments, I wouldn't want to go to auditions or wait around... I guess I was thinking more like local things at a small boutique or something like that. I guess I would try it and see if we would like it or not.

As long as it was fun, yes. I went to my first commercial audition when I was about 8 and I remember having much fun - plus I got the part. At such a young age I just thought it was cool that I got to get a day off of school and have donut for breakfast.

It would all depend on the circumstances... As long as it is fun for the child I don't see why not...

My son models for his father's website but I have never put him in anything professional (well except he once played on a playground and they took pictures for they play toys.)

I wouldn't push my daughter into it, but if she really wanted to, I wouldn't have a problem with it, as long as she agreed that we have to be smart about it, and research the companies that wanted to hire her and make sure they're all legitimate.

As long as you don't exploit your kids like Brooke Shields' mother, what the big deal?
I don't have any kids but my brother and sis-in-law let my nephew model for some local things. It wasn't anything major but he had fun and they added the money to his college fund. (My brother's a retired Marine and a police officer and his wife works for a phone company, they're expecting their 2nd so any extra helps!)

My daughter, now 16, modeled when she was younger and the very worst part - aside from the dropping everything last minute to audition, driving, and waiting - is the rejection. She did quite well but when she was chosen, she felt guilt because someone else didn't get it. When she wasn't chosen, she took it personally and didn't understand the business decision side of it. For her own mental health, I took her out of it.

i would, if it's just once in awhile, as long as my daughter want it too. It would be fun though,to get some extra cash and for her to get the experience
