There's lots of buzz about The Fisher-Price Smart Cycle, a Physical Learning Arcade System which is supposed to be the hot toy this holiday season. Retailing for around $100, the stationary bike which connects to your television encourages kids to learn three different ways.
They can drive — pedal and steer to control the on screen action of collecting letters and numbers, learn — use the joystick to play arcade style games or race — race other on screen cars by pedaling. Targeted at children ages three through six, it supposedly teaches letters, numbers, counting, problem solving, shapes, matching, creativity, spatial reasoning, and motor skills. And, additional cartridges are available for an additional $20.
Would you buy this?

at least theyre tryin to keep kids moving AND learning
1My thoughts exactly, beansandsyke
2Why not? Let them learn and have fun...and use up some of that excess energy. lol
3While I wouldn't advocate this being the ONLY source of exercise, I certainly don't see the harm in it. It's better than just being parked in front of the TV all day.
4I find these new fisher price toys that are coming out so redicilous!! I say let the kid go outside play some sports with their friends or take them to park so they could socialize. I do not see the point of letting the kid sitting in front of the tv alone playing games. I say it does not make the kids smarter. I think that Fisher Price wants to make a stupid generation so they could manipulate it. I don't think kids, tv and computer should mix in early ages.
5What's wrong with it? I think it's great!
6These things are great for a rainy day when your kid is stuck inside and really antsy.
When the day permits, choosing to do an outdoor activity is better than this though!
7I won't call it stupid, that's kinda harsh. My kids are older so they would have no need. Even if they did have the need, storing this thing looks like it would pose a problem. Like most kids, my son would play with this a few good times AND like everything else, the novelty would wear off.
8it has it's merits, say you live in an apartment and it's not always easy to take the kids out to the park. also where i live i wouldn't call it a safe environment to let my son run wild. not only is this getting *some* exercise and learning in, but at least the child is one place too and not bumping into furniture!
9Hahaha, it's 50/50. Or it was when i voted. Idk, im thinkin if I was four & wanted a new toy, this would look hekka fun. So i say yes. :]
10I myself wouldn't buy this, it's too expensive and I would have no room for it anyway but I can see how this would be good for a little kid. It seems like a great way to keep them moving when the weather is too bad to play outside, most kids would be watching TV during that time anyway.
11If the kids are going to sit in front of the tv or computer they might as well get some exercise while doing it! Not that you would plan to leave your child there for an extended period of time but some of the games are very educational. While you are doing dishes let them get 10 minutes of exercise and learn to spell a new word.
12I think it is a cute idea.
I agree that the outdoor play world is better for exercise, but when it is winter - you can't always get outside for long stretches.
13My baby is 2 young 4 this.
14I love this! My middle child has special needs and this would have been fabulous for him.... He's learning to ride a tricycle in PT and I think it would be great for hand eye coordination. Unfortunately I think he's too big for it now (He's 5 and is big for his age)
So, no I don't think it's stupid at all. It would also be great for kids that live in high traffic areas...
15Not sure, I think I'd advocate for exercise outdoors instead and on rainy days - colouring, reading, something other than parking them in front of a TV even if it has a "learning" game on it.
16The people at fisher price were definately thinking when they made this product. I wouldn't necessarily buy it because I live in a small apartment so I would have no room to store it. And although there is no substitute for running around outside, it is better than vegging out in front of the television like so many kids do these days. So my vote...good idea, but not for me.
17Not a fan.
18Seems like something my sister-in-law would get for my nephew, but he's not nearly old enough yet. Like someone else said, it looks like a great rainy day toy.
19My parents bought this for my 4 1/2 year old daughter for their home. She loves it. She can't wait to go over to their home to play. She really is learning too.
20I think its a great idea, because they are influencing a healthier lifestyle and teaching the kids some facts.
21That will be one of my son's Christmas gifts. He's going to be excited!
22I think it's great. If we had the room to store it we would probably already have it. I wouldn't use it as substitution
23for normal play and excersise.
i think its a great idea! a good way to get your kid to do something! other then SIT and play games.. i mean if i had childern i wouldn't allow them to play JUST this game i would make them go outside and play.. but the idea is a good one! like when its really cold out or later a night!

24I think it's a great idea!
25I think it's a great idea. Kids can learn so much through videogames and TV. I understand the reason some parents don't allow their children to watch TV or play videogames, but I just think that the children that are allowed are introduced to so much more than they can see in real life.
26Why does everything have to involve a tv? Let the kids go outside and play with their friends for cryin' out loud. Even if you can't get outside for whatever reason, there are other ways to get exercise that don't involve a tv.
27I could see how it might have its uses, in some circumstances. I've known special needs kids who couldn't get sun exposure, or who had clotting disorders where they had to be extra careful playing and so they couldn't ride a real bike. Or if you truly have an overweight kid who does need extra exercise.
Otherwise, though, why not get them a real bike and take them riding? My 3yo son rides his bike every night while we push the baby in the stroller with him.
Are people really so unimaginative now that they can't figure out what to do with a child on a rainy day? We don't own a TV. We play with toys, read books, cook, do tumbling on the living room floor. If kids get lots of TV, they don't know how to function without it, but if they don't get it, they do just fine.
28Our neighbor has one for their kid and my 4 year old osn LOVES to play on it. It's both educational and active, so I think it's a great idea!
29I won't be buying one, because I don't want such a large toy taking up living room space, but I still think it's a cool toy!
I think this is ok, but as long as it is used for a certain amount of time. I don't think it would be good for a kid to just be using it ALL the time.
