Three months into nursing, my daughter decided to go on a nursing strike. When the baby rejects the breast for anywhere between two days to three weeks, it's typically called a nursing strike. And, unfortunately, bottle-fed babies aren't immune to strikes.
My lil one decided to go for a record breaker and tortured me for close to three weeks. It was a nightmare. She wouldn't take a bottle, sippy cup or a regular cup. I even resorted to a medicine dropper, which was not fun or effective.
Before I lost my sanity, I went to visit a lactation consultant. She thought it was evident that my babe was too interested in the world around her to take time to eat. So she gave me some advice — to wear a big colorful necklace so my baby had something to focus on and play with instead of just boring old me. Thankfully, the tip worked and my lil angel returned.

That's a great tip!! I know my son LOVES playing with my husbands dog tags, that i wear.... Not that he has a problem staying interested in the booby, he's a total booby boy lol..
Nice to see that nursing tips are included around here!
1Great tip, I'll be sure to keep this in mind.
2Wow, three weeks is a really long time!
A nice, quiet and low-lit room will help a
nursing baby focus as well.
3I'm v far from having kids but for some reason I'm obsessed with this section! Love the tip, I find that really cute your daughter was too bored to think of eating.
(question: the 'lil' word everywhere is driving me insane, is it just me? :/ )
4Advah, I'm totally obsessed w/ this section too!!!!
And, like you, I am about 5-7
years away from baby time!
But then again, I've ALWAYS been baby crazy!!!
This is a great tip! I am going to try to stockpile everything in my mind so that I can remember all of this in several years!
5That's never happened to me. That must have been painful! I feel for you!
Thanks for the tip.
6OH! So -that's- what the problem is. Brody sometimes decides he doesn't want to eat from one side, but will be perfectly fine if I put him on the other side. Maybe I'll try getting a nursing necklace. Thanks for the tip!
7I'm like the other ladies on this board, far from having a baby but I had to comment.
All you ladies are talking about getting a nursing necklace but what you're forgetting is the spin you can put on this necklace to your hubby/boyfrind/baby daddy.
After days/weeks of no baby eating love, you can go up to him and say "our baby isn't eating, I read in all my books and online that they need something sparkly to look at while nursing." At that very moment you hand him a Tiffany's catalogue with all of the pretty necklaces convieniently circled for him.
Voila, two birds, one stone.
8That's a great tip! Most new moms mistake a nursing strike for weaning. Thanks for posting this!
9Never knew this could happen. Good tip.
10I am also in the no-baby-for-awhile-love-this-section boat! this is a great tip that made me laugh a little too. easy to laugh now till i get my turn with a little one that doesn't want to eat!
11kimdangirl,
Awesome idea!!
the look on my b/f's face would be priceless!!! I am definitely going to do that if my future
baby(ies) goes on strike!
12The same thing happened to me. I found a great nursing necklace at mymamarocks.com. Now my daughter plays with it all the time. If I am not wearing it she says, "rock? rock?" It's so cute, it sounds more like, "walk? walk?" But it's a good looking necklace so I wear it all the time.
