Baby Wellness: Humidifiers

If you're ever at Babies R Us roaming the aisles, you will come across a whole section of humidifiers. I never thought of purchasing one until my daughter came down with her first case of the sniffles and my pediatrician told me to invest in a humidifier. I bought a warm-mist humidifier and wow, did it make a difference. I don't know if I can credit it with curing my daughter overnight, but she was back to her old self the next day. A bonus for us is that it keeps her room a couple degrees warmer, which in the winter, is very comforting.

You can buy either warm- or cool-mist humidifiers. The warm-mist humidifiers are great because the heat from the machine will sterilize the water and mist. Just be careful not to put it in a place where the baby can tip it over or reach it since the steam or hot water could burn them. If you buy the cool mist, make sure you clean it often as instructed because you don't want bacteria and mold to infest the humidifier.

The bonus, we found, was that the machine makes a little white noise, too. Healthy and happy restful nights.

I live by humidifiers. I prefer the cool mist - which also helps cold weather, actually. Keeping the air moist allows for the temperature itself to be a little lower.

We use them as soon as cool weather hits.

I have the same warm mist humidifier in the picture, and we swear by it. It is so humid here during the warmer months that we don't need to use it until the winter when it's cold and dry. Being able to add the vapo-mist is really soothing for a cough, too.

I have a little piggy one for Brody. It's cute and I can actually see the mist coming out, but I swear it doesn't do anything!

I love the animal-shaped cool mist ultrasonic humidifiers by Crane! They work so well, and are very very quiet! I have the frog one in MY bedroom - doesn't really go with the decor, but its adorable anyway. I can definitely tell the difference when its on - the air doesn't feel so dry when you breathe. Also helps keep the humidity levels where they need to be so my husband's guitars don't warp every winter.

I never had one of these and never did my doctor recommend it for any of my sons colds. I wonder if it is something that is more regional? I'm in southern California on the coast, would that be the difference? Maybe I need a better pediatrician? Eye-wink

macgirl, I'm in Southern Cali and it's been a lifesaver. Smiling My kids still get colds and all that, but the humidifier eases the coughs in a huge way, as well as a lot of congestion.

I'm not on the coast, though. I'm inland. But it's pretty useful all around, from what I understand.

I can't remember if my ped suggested it or if I just tried it based on other mom advice.

We bought this same humidifier last winter on SweetPeasMom's recommendation and it's been a lifesaver! It really helps releive coughs and sniffles. Plus, like you said, it warms up baby's room a little bit. I'm terrified of space heaters, so this is perfect for me.
