Trendtotting: Wooden Toys

Everything cycles back — bell bottoms, shift dresses, even leggings! And, the trend applies to baby toys. If it’s old school, it’s the new cool and wooden toys are the current comeback kid.

Maybe it’s nostalgia that makes us buy wooden stacking rings, puzzles, trains, blocks, musical instruments and activity centers, but parenting groups say the toys are safer to play with since they are made of natural materials.

Oompa, Melissa and Doug, and Plan Toys have great selections. Who knew a timber tambourine would buy so much peace of mind?

There's this Toy store in Cambridge, MA that sells nothing but wooden toys like these. And they're so cute!

The stores name I forgot to mention is called "Stellabella Toys" and the toys are educational and developmental.

I found my daughters some wooden stacking rings for a dollar at the store a few months ago. They play with the all the time. It's definately one of their favorite toys. I even gave the plastic stacking rings away.

    I love Stellabella Toys!
I've been browsing toy stores recently, trying to decide how I'm going to spoil my soon-arriving niece/nephew. Wooden seems a great way to go...
p.s. don't you just love the word "xylophone"?

My boys had some wooden stacking rings...BUT...heres my beef with them. One...they are super heavy and at 2-1/2, my boys tend to drop things or toss them and with those rings being so heavy, they caused injury. Second...because they are wooden, they tend to be glued together, not properly fastened. So the pole for the wooden rings came out of its base, once the glue started working loose. Just an FYI. Laughing out loud

I've already warned the family - when we have children I will pick out the toys and if they give us something from toys r us I will donate them. I'm so into wooden, and creative toys, not the fisher price/generic ones. I mean the toys will end up all over the house, they better be attractive.

I LOVE Melissa and Doug. When my first was born, I was a total nazi about toys - didn't want anything that lit up or made noise. Those toys play with themselves! Spark the imagination! I've laxed up a little since then. But, I (and the kids) still love the wooden toys.

    Seconding the Haba love.

Ikea is one of my favorite places for toys, including wooden toys. My daughter loves to play on all the kid furniture, and the 99cent breakfast is perfect for a mid-morning snack.

My son loves this toy. We got it as a gift but it was purchased at our local toy store.

I will have to check those toy makers out. Buying toys is so scary now-a-days with all the recalls

    I love wooden toys!
So when I found a old school toy store during my vacation in Paris, I stocked up on several toys for my nieces!

i love the melissa and doug toys, but i have to say that i have had two problems with the quality already. one was a simple wooden stacking toy - the stick for the stacking rings came off. and another was a puzzle piece that broke in half, and puzzle pieces that werent sanded down properly.

but, i have to give credit where credit is due. i called the company and they replaced the toys - and so far there has been now trouble with the new ones.

so be careful when you buy, examine it first to make sure its not defective!

When we took our son to our local pumpkin patch we picked up a really cool wooden truck from their gift shop. My son LOVES it. It's such a simple toy, but that's the beauty in it.

Stellabella is a GREAT toy store!!! Henry Bear's Park is another great local store.

Melissa & Doug are really good values for the $$... ALSO... TJ MAXX often has a really big selection of M&D for like $3. I do try to visit my local independent stores as much as possible for toys and clothing, but TJ MAXX etc. can give you some really great values.

Maybe one of the reasons for the comeback in wooden toys is the alarming number of recalls on mainstream toys?
