Along with the birthday cake and balloons, there's another reason mommies are jubilant on a child's first birthday — milk! When babes reach their 1-year mark, it most often means they can start chugging cow's milk instead of formula or in addition to breast milk. In most instances, it means mum can start stocking up on gallons of milk (about $8/week) rather than relying solely on the breast or expensive formula ($29/can). Instead of tossing on a nursing shawl or packing powder and bottles of water for a lunch date, mommy can relax and order a small glass of milk along with her soda. Moms who supplement with formula will be thrilled to cut that expense from their shopping list, leaving more room in the budget for wine and cheese!
Currently on the top shelf of my fridge? Skim for dad, 1 percent for me, 2 percent for my 3-year-old, and whole for the 1-year old. Yeah, we got milk . . . lots of it.

Killah
My almost 2 year old hates milk. Refuses to drink it now that he's off bottles. I pushed it for awhile, but gave up and just realized it's not in the cards. I just try to give cheese and yogurt and hope he'll be ok.
1Jubilant? Really? I'd say that's quite the stretch. And why are you bashing nursing here? Breastmilk is even cheaper than cow's milk. Although I guess if you're a calf cow's milk is free - for humans, pretty expensive.
2Not here. We aren't big cow's milk fans. So does this mean I don't know I'm a mom?
3That picture is adorable, makes me smile every time
4I find it completely unnatural to feed your human children cows milk like it's a good thing. Right. Do your research and then preach about it.
5i was happy about him turning 1 for this reason, (i dont like the idea of formula, and dont care for breastfeeding either)but he hated milk till very recently -now hes 22 months. still hates cheese. he ate a lot of yogurt but finally now prefers milk. i often crave cheese and pudding and creamy foods but milk not so much. btw if u live in the usa u should really be drinking organic there are A LOT of things in the milk there. hormones antibiotics pesticides....not healthy!
6The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for TWO years. Not replacing breastmilk with cow's milk. I don't understand the rush to give children non-species appropriate milk.
7My baby's doctor actually told me to start giving her whole milk at nine months. She self weined off formula and bottles at 11 months. No one is saying you have to switch to cow's milk, it just have to be convenient for some mothers (like me). There is not doubt it does a body good, but as always to each their own.
8Actually there are a lot of doubts that it does a body good. If you're interested a quick google search will reveal the debate.
9I breast fed my son past the first year. I limit cow's milk as it's not suitable for constant human digestion. So, no, not all mothers clamor for milk.
10Was this post sponsored by the dairy industry?
Really, who has four different types of milk in their home? Ridiculous.
11Yeah, no joke. And why not just compromise and get 1% for you and the kids. This is ridiculous and misinformed.
12I've been drinking 1-2 gallons of cow's milk every four days, non organic, in the US since I was 11, and my mom started me on cow's milk as soon as I weaned at about 9 months. Now I'm 25 and it's expensive because I'm a poor grad student, but it has definitely done MY body good. It's delicious, it's available, and my risk for osteoporosis has decreased significantly. Nothing that I'm putting in my body from cow's milk is any worse than the crap we all put in our bodies just from living in an industrial society.
