It's safe to say that many parents would be willing to pay top dollar to find out what is making their baby cry. So it's only logical that there are studies surrounding the subject and solutions marketed for those desperate parents. From research finding that newborns wail with an accent to a new iPhone application that claims to help new parents figure out why their lil one is screaming mad — we are obsessed with baby tears. Adept parents may find that they are able to notice a subtle difference in their tot's crying and can actually tell if the wails are from hunger, anger, distress, and more. For everyone else, a teary episode results in running through an arsenal of tactics proven to get baby back to smiles.
Tell mommy, are you able to decipher between your babies cries or does it all sound the same to you?

I'm not a Mom, but I can decipher baby cries. I don't know how -- I just can.
1sometimes!
2I almost always knew, and still do, though the types change as they grow older and adjust their attitudes to responses.
But my daughter was colicky.. it was either learn the cries or wonder what she needed during her 24/7 crying. She literally never stopped crying unless she was eating/sleeping, which didn't happen in longer then 1 1/2 hr periods. It was stressful.
3I must be a terrible mom, because I never really could figure out why my daughter cried when she was a baby. I would just run through the check-list: hungry, dirty, tired...
4Now that she's a little older (14 months) I can decipher the cries, but she's more expressive as well.
Nope. Sorry - all of my sons cries basically sound the same to me. Though it's easy to understand WHY he cries since he only cries when he's cranky (when someone wakes him from his slumber). Otherwise, he's a very non-cry-y baby and grunts to communicate his displeasure.
