People say the most ridiculous things to pregnant women. While expecting my daughter and son, my jaw constantly dropped at the rude, crude and absent-minded things people said to me...with a straight face. BabySugar encountered the same nonsense while she was with child. But, it appears that the third time is the charm since I can really only recall two off comments people have made to me in the past 40 weeks. The first was about a month ago when I was shopping for a friend's wedding gift and the glass saleswoman told me to sit down before my water broke. She then told me to double check with my doctor because she was sure I was having twins. Thanks lady. The next was a few days later when I ran into an acquaintance who told me she was less than half my size when she had her daughter. "Good for you," was all I could muster as a response.
But those two doozies aside, this has been a low-key pregnancy with lots of perks — like complimentary beverages and servers at my favorite cafes betting on the sex of my baby. Who knew baristas were so into procreating? While stopping to pick up water spiked with a little green tea and a coffee for my husband, three different coffee clerks at separate Starbucks locations gave me free drinks! To hear other sweet gestures I've experienced this time around, read more.
Then, at the farmers market, when I purchased a baguette from a booth, the cashier told me she couldn't possibly charge a lady bringing a baby into the world for bread. In addition to the nice gestures, I haven't been the recipient of much unsolicited advice either. I attribute that to the fact that since I'm traveling with two other kiddos in tow, they either understand I don't have time to chat it up with strangers or they are writing me off as a woman who obviously didn't take the advice offered years ago. Either way, I'm good with it!

I had inappropriate comments, questions and advice thrown at me for all 4 of my pregnancies.
I always hated the "don't you know what causes that?" comment. I'd usually come back with "Yes, we do, why do you think we keep having them?" or "Yes, and maybe you should try doing it more yourself, might improve your attitude."
1As a woman who decided not to have children, I get rude comments, too. I was told I was "selfish," "lazy," "not a real woman (as real women have children)," etc. Ironically, these comments were from other women.
I guess there is no way to avoid rude comments. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't.
2I agree Glowing Moon, I get just as mad at people who express rude comments to people without children for not having them.
It all boils down to people thinking they know what's best for others and telling others how to live their lives.
3Seeing as I'm very petite, I definitely got a lot of rude comments. "And HOW old are you??" etc. It was extremely hard not to come back with something equally rude to say. I'm hoping the next time around will be a little easier.
4Man, what is this world coming to?! People just think they can walk around and criticize other people? That is just WRONG. I mean, how would THEY like to be criticized and told how to live their lives?! SHEESH!
5The only thing I've ever said to a pregnant woman is how adorable she looks while pregnant. The things you people have listed so far definitely made my jaw drop. It's the worst when it's customer service people.
6When I was desperately trying to get pregnant, I got a lot of people saying, "you're getting old, what are you waiting for?" and other comments that make me feel horrible. Now that I am 6 months along, I am sporting a round belly and have actually LOST weight from where I started at the beginning of the pregnancy (that's a good thing). Yesterday I was standing in line at a festival and some random older man wanted to get by me. He said, "oh, I don't know if I can squeeze through here." Um, haha? I don't understand what men especially are thinking when it comes to pregnant women and babies/ small children. I was in a baby store with a friend and her 2 year old little girl a few months ago and some older man started talking directly to her daughter and actually patted her on the hand. I WAS APPALLED. I think old men should say NOTHING to pregnant women and small children who they do not know, as a rule!
7The funniest thing anyone said to me - i was going up the stairs at work, and an older guy asked - "Should you be doing that?" I guess all pregnant women in the world live in 1 story houses?
8My mom did give me the best comeback ever - When someone asks you a rude question - smile - and say "If you'll forgive me for not answering, I'll forgive you for asking."
I was born with a small cleft lip. Not nearly as bad as the poor kids you see pictures of in magazines but i guess it was bad enough for people to always say things to my mom. I got the surgery when i was 2 because i was a very sick baby but people would always come up and say "oh my! what happened to her face!" Even after the surgery! My mom told me of a time when she was in the grocery store with me when i was 4 years old and someone asked that same question and i put my head down and cried. If someone did that to my kid, i would not hesitate to knock 'em down.
9I dont know where people get off making rude comments to others. Its ridiculous.
