What does every teacher get on the first day of school? An apple. Smiling faces would be more than enough for any educator, but parents often usher them in with a less than shiny fruit that ends up in the teacher's lounge. In an effort to do something fun the night before my daughter's very first day of preschool, together we made Rice Krispies apples that I hope won't be tossed into the compost.

Using the same ingredients (plus one) that you use for regular Rice Krispies treats, melt the marshmallows and butter in a pan or bowl. Add some red gel dye to the mix. When the mixture is a lush red, add the cereal to the mix and stir. Instead of pouring the mixture into a pan, make baseball size balls and lay them out in pans that can be refrigerated. Once they have cooled off for a little bit, take them out and sculpt them into apple molds. For my stem and leaf, I used a diced up caramel and half of a green sugar candy. Using a straw, poke a small hole on top and add a leaf and a stem. Wrap it up in cellophane and tie a ribbon around it. Attach a card with your child's name and that teacher will be begging for apples year-round!

1This is such a creative alternative to just picking up something at the store - it's so heartfelt and sweet and I love that you can do it with kids. As an added bonus, teachers will totally enjoy this apple more than a fruity one. Adorable!
2they look lovely and I might even try and make them one day, but is this serious: children (or rather their parents) are commonly trying to bribe teachers on the frst day of school? And this is encouraged? I can't believe it that parents teach their children that is is expected to suck up in order to be liked...
3This was definitely not a bribe... rather a fun activity for my daughter and I to do together the night before school. It has nothing to do with trying to bribe a teacher.
4I hope that when school starts for me this year, parents of the older kids I teach will send them off to school with a "no-snarky-attitude" chip embedded into their heads. That would be a very well received gift
Though, this is such a cute idea. I may make these to
celebrate the start of the school year and maybe win some brownie points so the said snarky attitude may not rear it's head until mid-terms come along

8These are REALLY cute, and a really great idea. Things can get a little overdone with purchased gifts, one year when i was in 4th grade, one of the girls in my class brought in a gigantic basket of apples. Like half a horse bucket size..lol. She was uncomfortable and it was obvious her parents were forcing her.
So, when my sisters and I were in school, we never purchased anything for our teachers at the end of the year or christmas, but we always made them something. Our teachers have always really apreciated the home made things, and we often saw them on the walls or their desks years later. So, I really like this idea! We used to do things like small school themed cross stitching, homemade photo albums, etc. It's a shame so many people think people don't care about home made things.
9Looks really neat and would definitely be a great activity for a child. And think of their pride when presenting it to their teacher to say that they made it.

13I wonder about making them green, a la granny apples, would avert the first pass "looking like raw meat" problem. Might be easier to find something natural to turn them green versus red (per the comment worried about red food coloring).

15A parent made these for us at the end of the year. They were delicious! She made green & red apples using food coloring. She used green decorating sugar in one area on some of the red apples which was cute. For a leaf she used the green part of a fruit roll up. Each apple had an M & M in the middle. It was the best rice krispie I ever had!
16These look great and such a nice gesture too. It's something that you can do with your child and an opportunity for a child to do something in the kitchen that is age approriate and safe.
I'm not a mom but maybe I'll try this out with my sisters.
