A newly expectant lady often knows what to buy when it comes to the layette and crib, but when she sets out to buy a breast pump, she may not have the slightest idea what to look for in her purchase. Since many retailers do not offer breast pump returns, it behooves the mama-to-be to learn about the breast pump's purposes before charging her card. Here are a few things to consider:
- Does it have a stimulation phase to help the mother's milk let down?
- Is it portable? A mom on the go may prefer a light and portable pump.
- Does it have hand-free capabilities? Though it's not a necessity, some moms could benefit greatly from such amenities.
- Can you control the strength and speed of the suction to mimic your own child's?
To see the rest of the list, read more.
- Is it hand, battery or electric operated? Some offer all of the above. For moms pumping often, an electric pump may prove to be worth the investment.
- How easy is it to clean and change the parts?
- Can you pump both sides at once or is it a single breast pump?
- Can bottles and bags collect the milk? Moms wanting to store the milk right away may like the choice of pumping directly into a bag.
Instead of buying ahead of the delivery, many women wait until they have started breastfeeding so they can get a feel for their needs. If she is still unsure of her pump requirements, she might choose to rent a pump (either from a breast pump store or the hospital) until she can determine what she needs.

These are all great ideas but I am still so confused about what to get. I usually love to read reviews and have that help me choose but they are so mixed that I just get overwelmed trying to figure out what to get.
1This is great! It is so overwhelming to choose a pump, so this is really helpful!
2no. 1 of the 3 lcs we saw recommended renting one for this very reason. then, if you like it, buy it. there isn't much sense in buying one before your baby arrives, since you don't know how lucky you will be with b-feeding. plus, by seeing the lc in the hospital and needing to pump we got a lot of the materials (and they were billed to insurance!). got to try out the pump that i later rented.
and btw do NOT borrow one from a friend. the hospital-grade units that you can rent make sure that no milk touches any internal parts that can't be washed.
3I agree that renting a hospital grade pump is a great option. If you're pretty certain you're going to be pumping a lot (especially at work), get the Medela Pump in Style. If you're going to be a SAHM for a while and won't need to pump all the time, just get a manual pump, but get a decent one (an Ameda, Medela, or Avent). The ones that look like bicycle horns can damage your breast tissue so avoid those.
4I own a Purely yours breast pump. As a sahm I love it. It also runs on batteries for when you're out and about. I liked the price too.
5u can buy it here:

I don't agree with getting a manual one for any reason unless you desperately need to save money or are good with having very little breastmilk on hand. Manual pumps make it very difficult for most women to get even a full bottle to have on hand, much less extra.
I have no problem with my friends and I loaning ours out to each other. The internal portions can't be sterilized, but we all know and trust each other on whether milk's ever even touched those parts. My pump (the Pump in Style, which I very highly recommend) has never even backed up into the tubing, much less the inner portions of the pump.
Here renting a hospital grade is more expensive for even a couple of months than buying a Pump in Style is, so it wasn't an option for me. I also wanted it on hand from the moment baby was born to encourage production and establish a supply, so I got it beforehand.
6I love my pump in style advanced. Its wonderful.
7I loved my manual pump while I was engorged and just starting out and also when my daughter was teething (she gave me really sore nipples). My sister who knew I was determined to nurse bought me a pump in style, which I loved as well.
