In the cliff-hanger season finale of Private Practice, a grief stricken patient who suffered a miscarriage attempted to cut out Violet's nine-month-old fetus from her. The storyline wasn't an imaginative one created by the show's writers, but taken from society. Earlier this week, authorities found a New Hampshire infant that had been ripped from his deceased mother's womb and passed off as a neighbor's baby. When we posted about the Safe Stork flags some moms-to-be attach to their cars to fend off crazy drivers, one reader questioned why anyone would want to alert strangers to their expectant status. Carrying a child for forty weeks is an incredible experience, but has it made you more safety conscious?

I was also warned not to put out those stork signs and It's a boy/girl balloons when coming home from the hospital. Burglars will sometimes target these homes because they know the adults inside will likely be exhausted and they know there will be plenty of valuable baby stuff inside.
1Even though I don't think this would happen where I live, I was really paranoid about something like this happening with my first. Someone I knew kept bringing up stories about this. I told her she needed to keep her mouth shut or have it slapped off. Then after my daughter was born people kept telling me "oh how beautiful I could just steal her!" Really not the things to say to an expectant mom or one who just had a newbie.
2It's crazy that you wrote this because I was just telling my husband yesterday how I hate it when women ask me when I'm due or even looked at my belly for more than a second. I always get scared and think they will follow me home and take the baby out. And with our first child we refused to put a bow on the house or an announcement in the paper. And the new show called "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant"?? Yeah, that should really be taken off the air because I feel like the womb-robbing may happen more and the perpetrator will simply say "Of course it's my baby, I didn't know I was pregnant!" Obviously this excuse will only go so far but you get my point.
3The chance of some woman cutting your baby out of you are so slim, I don't think it is anything to worry about. Although I do understand some might.
I have never heard of not decorating the front yard because of burglars. My view will always be not to let the bad guys rule your life. So I'll be decorating
4The chance of someone cutting your baby out of your body - while frightening, of course - is very slim. You are much MUCH more likely to die from a car accident, high blood pressure, or obeisity related causes (sorry to be a buzzkill!)
5it isn't about the mother dying, runningesq, it is about someone hurting the baby. the protection instincts kick in like crazy.
that said, we had no announcement, no decorations. we don't leave the stroller sit on the porch. and most importantly, when i'm out shopping alone with the baby, i NEVER park in "parents of infants" spaces. (nor did i park in "expectant mother" spaces, either.)
6typically i would say no to this because in general i feel pretty safe - but thinking about what's been on the news lately, it makes you think a bit. they are saying now that instances where people do these types of things is on the rise and that's a bit scary to me.
