It's one thing to spray tan and coif a disinterested child onto the stage, but it's another to pit twin sisters against each other. After most lilsugar readers said they found the premise of kid beauty pageants creepy, I decided to watch the second season opener of Toddlers & Tiaras last night. While I expected the stage moms, showgirl costumes, hairpieces and veneers that were all too common in past episodes, this show spot lit a relationship that was hard to watch. Mother of five contestants, Jamie Sterling, has her six-year-old fraternal daughters — BreAnne and AshLynn — and clearly favors the former. After saying that BreAnne is the prettiest child and takes after her mama, Jamie spent most of her time focusing on the lil talent. Meanwhile, AshLynn was told her sister was getting a new dress and that she'd have to wear a ripped one.
It was heartbreaking to see the sweet child try her hardest despite her mother's disinterest while BreAnne was given special treatment. Though when BreAnne's behavior turned toward that of a spoiled brat, her father (who is uncomfortable with the whole situation) stepped in much to his wife's chagrin and pulled her from the pageant. In her sister's absence and a fitting end, AshLynn won both third runner-up and the director's choice titles. A clip of BreAnne bragging that she was the real winner aired after the program. When AshLynn objected, BreAnne explained that was what their mom said. Did you tune in? Source: TLC

Kit Heath
this mom was ugly, inside and out. i feel terrible for her poor children, and believe that the way she treated ashlynn was horrendous.
1This is disgusting, it makes me sick. I wish we would stop glorifing this crap.
2I mean with tv shows, btw lol.
3I think it's appaling to be putting our kids on display like this! It's one thing to compete inany sort of pagent when you're an adult and can make the decision for yourself, but to make our kids do this is wrong. For anyone who says that their kids want to do it, they've just been trained this way by their parents. We need to be teaching all our children that they are wonderful, beautiful people just the way that they are! Pagents just put more emphasis onto looks in a time when there's already too many kids getting sick from trying to fit into the beautiful molds!
4I WATCHED THIS SHOW FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY, I WANTED TO CRAWL THRU THE TV AND BEAT THIS WOMEN OR CALL CHILD SERVICES ON THIS WITCH!!! WTF IS HER PROBLEM!!! THAT POOR BABY ON THE TV BROKE MY HEART SHE KNOWS HER MOTHER DOESN'T THINK SHE IS GOOD ENOUGH!!! WHERE IS THE FATHER!! THE MOTHER IS UGLY!!!! SHE NEEDS NEW TEETH!!! WHITE TRASH!! THIS WOMEN NEEDS TO HAVE HER KIDS TAKEN AWAY!! SHE IS SELLING THEM!!!!! SHE NEEDS MENTAL HELP!!!
5So is this show the next Jon and Kate Plus 8? What I mean by that is being bombarded with every detail of the show here on lilsugar.
6I agree with most of what Anonymous #5 said. I wanted to ring that woman's neck for the torture she was inflicting on sweet AshLynn. Hopefully she will benefit from the mother's ignoring ways — she can grow into an independent girl who will find out there's more to the world than pageants. Her poor (be it favored) sister will probably always look to crowns for glory though.
7I don't think childrens beauty pageants are wrong. When I was little i used to LOVE them. I got to put on a pretty dress and wear pretty earings and I would go on stage feeling like a queen. Even though the name 'beauty pageant' may make you think " They only judge little girls on there beauty", pageants also depend on your presents and your confidence in yourself.
8I forgot to add that it was wrong of the mom to get carried away over the pageant, but not all pageant children and moms brag and be mean to their children just to win.
9Although Jamie Sterling is without a doubt the worst of the three featured last night, none of them are shining examples of good moms. Edens mother had her at a photo shoot with a fever, I felt SO bad for that little girl. She did make mention that she would be taking her to the doctors AFTER they were done, great priorities. I don't think I even need to get into how messed up poor little Eden will be in the future. Thinking that the only thing that matters is that she wins for looking like the best little showgirl. Her mother should be ashamed of herself.
As to the boys mother. No better. Talking about her infant having "stage presence" WHAT ?!?! That little baby should have been home in is crib, or being rocked to sleep rather than dressed up and paraded in front of a bunch of strangers. I feel for Camaron also. He's an adorable little boy, but he also seems to have a false sense of what matters. I don't see life being kind to any of these children.
What I don't get, is why do these mothers need someone else to tell them how wonderful their kids are? I have two kids and I know how wonderful and beautiful they are. I don't need to pay some strangers to tell me that.
Of course poor little darling Ashlynn, *sigh*....my heart broke for that child and I can only hope this show will have some positive outcome for all of the Sterling girls. Although Breanne was the "bratty" one, she too is a product of her mothers cruel parenting style. I swear the mother was gleeful when she made Ashlynn cry over the dumb dress. I wouldn't be surprised if the mother tore it up herself, just to be a bully.
The entire show was painful to watch.
10omg, is lilsugar shilling for another TLC show? who would have guessed?
11this story is INSANE
12those children will be so messed up
i can only say i'm thankful the dad dislikes the idea of the pageants and will likely help keep these kids stable in the future
What it all comes down to is that the Mother's are not doing this for their little girls, they are doing it for themselves. When you are a parent, it's not about you, it's your kids first, and that's it!
13I also watched this episode last night. I've only watched the show once before and both times was not by choice, but because I was working on something and wasn't able to change the channel. My 11 year old son was in the room with me and he said it was creepy how the little girls had all that make-up on and how they had to perform.
14I blogged about this too today and all I can say is that I want to find little AshLynn and shower her with love, kisses, cupcakes and accolades.
Since it's apparent someone already took Jamie Sterling and her MR Ed chompers out back and beat her with an ugly stick, what's left is to rub her nose in cat crap for hours. This poor example of a mother needs to be removed, IMMEDIATELY, from the gene pool.
15I hope the Sterling family saves money for AshLynn's therapy when she is older. That poor little girl. She is SO beautiful. But being put down by her mother! ugh! What kind of a parent puts down her child over another. I have 2 daughters myself and have never even thought of telling one that she is better than the other. I can't even choose between my children. That is how a parent should be. I hope the Dad sees this and puts a stop to it.
16DISGUSTING how Jamie Sterling treats her daughters!!!!! She is the type of parent that causes complexes!!! Ashlyn deserved Director's Choice for having to be subjected to competing against her own twin sister and treated as though Breanne was so much better and prettier. What an UGLY thing for a mother to do. I think of the two Ashlyn is much prettier inside and out. The reason she is so reserved on stage is because that 'mother' doesn't give her enough credit to have the confidence in herself to do well. How could Jamie say to Breanne to not say something ugly about her sister when she herself says ugly things all the time?? What a double standard. I think this mom needs some lessons in parenthood and attitude.
17It makes me sick that so many women out there are trying to have a healthy child, and this WOMAN was given FIVE and doesn't deserve a one. It made me cry to watch the way she treated AshLynn. That poor beautiful little girl will grow up feeling inferior her whole life and for no reason. The Sterling mom should be ASHAMED of herself.
18I thought throughout the show: "Are these women so insecure about themselves, their looks, their popularity in the past, that they must live through their children being considered beautiful, confident, and "accepted.""
Oh, I felt for AshLynn the entire episode. Did you hear her mother say something about AshLynn's nose!?! Even though it looked like the mother had already had a nose job. But sadly, BriAnne is going to be the one whose life is ruined by her mother and pagents...I can see AshLynn rising above it.
19this was the 1st time i ever watched this show to... it made me sick but i couldn't turn it off! trainwreck.
20teh twins situation was plain emotionally abusive by that terrible mother. i think that ashlynn will grow up and never speak to her mother & pageant sister
that 4yr old saying that her mom's hand 'puppets' were her best friends was just puthetic. and she had a fever! poor girl
didn't see the show, but honestly this just sounds like most parents. once your kids to get to age 5, and certainly by age 8, most parents think their little darling is either, 1) going to the olympics in whatever sport they participate in, 2) going to be the next disney child singing star, or 3) going to graduate from harvard with a 4.0 in 2 years.
parents seem to over identify with their children. anything that happens to their child happens to them. nothing is their child's fault and their child is the BEST at everything.
i think beauty pageants, and certainly one on a television show, are a microcosm of our society.
21It made me sick to watch. You could see in little AshLynn's eyes that her heart was breaking. She tried so hard and really never even got alot of praise from mom when she did do well. It is ridiculous because it is hurting the relationship that those sisters should have for life, which should be more important than pageants and who is more beautiful. Every child is beautiful in their own way and should get recogntion, especially from their parents,no matter if you have a bigger nose, or whatever else her mom found wrong with her. I can't imagine doing that to my kids. So sad!!
22I am currently watching the Toddlers and Tiaras. I am not a fan of pageants and find the parents to be idiotic most of the time. I am livid with the Sterling Witch...She should be beaten within an inch of her life. I am crying inside for this child, Ashlynn. All we can hope is that one day this b*tch gets everything she deserves. The father needs to take those children and run as fast as he can. Briann will grow up to be a nightmare at best. Ashlynn, for you I pray one day you will find the love you deserve. Mrs Sterling you are an evil b*tch.
23That mom disgust me. She acts horrible to her children and is messing up her kids. Ashlyyn is a beautiful child and is now brain dead because of her sis, Brianne. Ashlyyn first of all pretier and has a much better attitude. She deserves her special award and i am there for you, ashlyyn. PS. Mom, your just not that great looing and you need to teach your Brianne how to speak correctly.
24That's just terrible.
25If I want to teach my child excellence and confidence, I'd have them learn an instrument and have them perform on stage or put them on a sports team. Pageants teach arrogance, entitlement and highlight looks over talent. What about teaching your child teamwork, compassion and determination? This day and age I think the last thing kids need to learn is how to be selfish and self-serving.
26I watched the show last season and wasnt going to watch it again but decided at the last minute I would. I have to say that the Sterling woman made me sick to my stomach and I did cry for Ashlynn, just broke my heart how she was so mean to her. I couldnt believe she said the other one was the prettier one cause she looked just like her momma and I'm thinking lady have you looked in the mirror lately? Poor child if she grows up to look like her mother. I thought Ashlynn was cuter anyway and the way her mother treated her was just beyond words and how she pitted those 2 against each other, she should be ashamed of herself. I hope all her friends and family watched and saw how she treated those girls and know the real person she is. She is an awful mother!!!
I am so glad that Ashlynn won the directors choice, you could tell that lady talking at the end seemed to know what Ashlynn is going thru with her mother and sister and I'm so glad they recognized her for it, ripped dress and all.
I mean that ugly mr. ed looking mother didnt even fix Ashlynns ripped dress, that is just off the charts wrong.
That being said, the woman with the 2 week old baby was a bit over the top....
Why are the pageant moms so ugly, has anyone else noticed? I mean where do they find these women...LOL
27We do "natural" scholorship type pageants ...never glitz! This is the first time that I "hated" watching the show. I cried for Ashlynn. Her mom was soooo mean and doesnt see what she is doing to that poor child. As for the lady with the 2 week old little boy.... She's nuts !!! What in the hell can a newborn gain from a glitz pageant ????
28Jamie & Barry Sterling better start saving their money for all the therapy poor little AshLynn will need from suffering years of emotional abuse from her "so called" mother. She should be banned from reproducing! For her, it should be a felony!
29I watched this show once in a while last season because it made me chuckle. I can't say the same thing about this season's opener. Objections to this life style aside, watching AshLynn Sterling's story was a heartbreaking experience. When Barry took her twin out of the pageant, I almost stood and cheered. It was obvious to everyone else -- even the pageant director -- that Jamie Sterling's behavior was outrageous. My hope is that she will see herself in the light that we have seen her, and make some changes. If she doesn't, everyone in that family will suffer greatly.
30Well children services have been contacted as well as other people of authority for child abuse thru and thru by the courts. They will be very sorry once the film is viewed for them and all involved will be attacked by leagal beavers in Texas!
31I hope that the Sterling Mom watched her ridiculous behavior and is totally and completely ashamed of herself and embarassed. I hope that the Sterling Dad sees it and realizes what a monumental mistake it was to let his wife have her way with the pageants and tells her "NO MORE!!" This family was so painful and maddening to watch!!
32I just watched the most recent episode and I must say the mother of the 4 girls 2 of which are twins is just a down right nasty person!! And not to mention she is gonna cause the one twin "with the bigger nose" as she called it to have a life time of resentment!!!! She obviously favors the other twin just look how down she is on the one "with the bigger nose" all I can say is WOW!!!
33I, too, was appalled at the obvious bias the Sterling mom had for one twin over the other!! This mom has MAJOR issues, and she should be forced to attend psychological counseling by her HUSBAND!! He seems to have a better head on his shoulder, and I'm thrilled he pulled the "favorite" twin. This mom is going to ruin her twins' future relationship with each other because of her damaging behavior of favoring one twin over the other! I thought the "favorite" twin was a brat and the other twin was actually much prettier and precious. Glad she won the big prize!
34She was a b*tch my child is 18 months old and she is in pageants i would never say things like "her nose is large" Jamie does not deserve the beautiful child Ashlyyn. And I most say she is WAY MORE BEAUTIFUL than that BRAT BreAnne.I don't think the Dad knew all that was said!!! I hope he sees that show and pulls all his girls out of pageants. And don't get me started on that ugly MOM she looks like a horse with her LARGE teeth.boy oh boy was she UGLY!!!!!!!!
35Im still extreemy bothered by watching her do that.
36while the producers found it GOOD MATERIAL..
Im a twin mom and I cant BELIEVE how sad EVERYDAY that little girl will be forever.
I did cry over it for her.
MR Sterling PLEASE TAKE them and RUN..............
Breanne has been manipulated its not her fault whatsoever if she seems bratty
37I agree with everything that has already been said about Jamie Sterling...no sense wasting time repeating it. I just hope that after the Sterlings watched the show Mr Sterling does the right thing and puts an end to the pageants. After that, some therapy might be in order! I wish TLC would do a follow up on these girls...I would like to know if anything has changed for the better.
38I have always watched this show, to see all the beautiful lil kids. However,am always amazed at how ignorant/out of touch with reality, the parents [usually the Moms ] are, about the pagents and their children. Usually, the Moms aren't that attractive, which is,apparently, why they are living thru their lil girls. And,pushing on them, what they couldn't do themselves. The one who sticks in my mind the most, was a large, not attractive [not because of her weight] woman who said the only parents who would find fault in putting their children in the pagents, evidently had ugly children!
39I have to say this Jamie Sterling is an,absolute, idiot and should be banned from entering her children in any Pagents. If these Pagents really do care about the children, they should be as appalled,as the rest of us, at the horrible treatment, that was shown to sweet Beautiful lil AshLynn, at that pagent. And, not allow Mrs 'Who-ville Face',to subject her girls to such abuse again.
You could see her just 'light up' whenever she talked about BreAnne, and get almost 'giddy 'about her, especially when she mentioned that she looked like her 'Mama'..NOT...And, to have, then, said she was the prettiest,of all of the girls...on Nat'l TV where all the kids could hear! You know she's always saying these things at home, and God only knows how much worse,if she acted that way on TV. Someone, seriously, needs to have Child Welfare check on those kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do have to commend Dad for taking that lil Brat, out of the Pagent. Go Dad!!!! That's another first! You need to give that Mom a Reality Check, right away!!!!!!
BreAnne and all those little darlings were beautiful, but AshLynn, without a doubt, is the prettiest, and sweetiest and kindest, and deserves to know that all the rest of the world/tv audiance, saw her to be the True Beautiful, one of 'Tha Twins'. Don't ever forget it,AshLynn.
I could not beleive Jamie it was horriable the way she made Ashlynn feel, I beleive she got a kick out of making her cry. I hated the part when the dress was torn and she said another one was coming and it would fit her sister. My 5 year old does natural pageants she is on stage about 2 minutes in long dresses, cowgirl, and halloween outfits. She loves it, I have told her when she is done tell me and we will quit. I ask her every week if she wants to to it. I can't beleive that lady acted the way she did, can you imagine the way Ashlynn is treated when there is no camra around. I hope the producers told her that she was horriable to her child. I was so excited when she won the directors award it was a slap in her moms face. I thought she was beautiful, and so sweet. I hope she see's the comments made about her and realizes she is emotionally abusing Ashlynn. She got her big teddy bear she wanted!!! Go Ashlynn woohoo
40I truly hope that this show will yield a greater good than just us having to watch an obvious injustice and a future of problem kids waiting to happen. Just like "To catch a predator" those predators who were caught were brought to justice, Child Welfare should also zero in on these parents and bring them into justice! No, it's not just that BreAnn's mom was ugly on the out side, it was the fact that she blatently displayed CHILD ABUSE against her children! It is clear to anyone watching. Child abuse is child abuse, whether verbal, physical or emotional and any combination thereof. Don't you guys agree?
41I DVR everything, so I just watched AshLynn & BreAnne last night (7/26). And I NEVER post comments, however..............
My mouth dropped when I saw the difference in treatment between the twins. If Jamie doesn't get a handle on HERSELF and recognize the damage she's doing to both of her daughters, she will definitely have her hands full the older they get. And I'm not sure what mirror Jamie is looking in, but AshLynn is by far the prettiest of the 2, NO QUESTION. Her looks are pure and sweet. And lucky for AshLynn, she looks NOTHING like her mother! AshLynn is begging for approval and if Jamie doesn't start doing damage control, someone else will start praising her daughter and the outcome might not be to anyone's benefit.
Listen to your husband Jamie! Before you lose him too!
42I never post to sites like this. But as soon as I finished watching the episode with AshLynn and BreAnne, I was completely disgusted with Mom-Sterling and felt a need to say something. I have never in my life seen a woman treat her child this way. Especially when she knows she is being taped by the TLC crew. What kind of mother doesn't even cheer for her daughter---did anyone else see that the mom didn't even clap after AshLynn finished her talent?
The final clip where the twins were discussing who won, made me cry. You could see how crushed AshLynn's self esteem is and the hurt in her eyes. I have never been so upset with a stranger as i am at this moment.
I hope that the mother sees how HORRIBLE she is and changes her ways. I am heartbroken for AshLynn, and think BreAnne needs to be taken down a notch or two.
I see nothing wrong with pageants but see everything wrong with lifting one child up at another childs expense.
43I was completely horrified when I watched this episode! My mother treated me like Ashlynn it was horrible and let me tell you it effects my whole self worth! The husband needs to get custody of all his gets and leave that HEFER out in the streets! I have never been so upset with tv program in my life! Something needs to be done ASAP! Poor little girl!
44I am too absolutely sickened by this poor mothering by Jamie Sterling. I honestly think that the two look EXACTLY the same...they're twins. So why she is so big on one's looks over the others is beyond me. They both are beautiful and DON'T look like their mother. That dad needs to just take the kids and get away from that nut case! I hope the best for the girls and really hope the Sterling's family sees this and gets on Jamie's case for acting like such a dumb a** on TV!!
45I have watched this show on occasion, only to watch the stressed out moms. But this episode is child abuse! Ever heard of Cinderella? Except this time she has a dad whos to afraid to do anything and a crappy real mpm. Poor little AshLynn is kind and sincere, but her b**** of a mother is to shallow and stupid to recognize that. I'm not a big pagent fan, but I am just appalled by this monotany! It just makes me wonder how the other girls are treated at home. Apparrently its all about Breanne, and no one else matters. I can only hope someone involved in child welcare saw this show and is investigating the matter. Unfortunately those chances are slim. I hope the father realizes his wifes unruly behaivior and leaves her with her precious Breanne, takes the others, and leaves! I can't believe what AshLynn will be like when she sees this. And I wanted to hug the dad when he took his brat of a daughter out of the pagent. The ending scene made me want to smack Breanne. After her sister tried to cheer her up she just put her down! That mom needs some serious help, and AshLynn needs to get out before she is ruined!!
46I was a pageant girl when I was 12. I felt unwanted when I was 11 and I was not confident. My mom took me to my first pageant, and I loved it. I didn't have extravagant dresses but it sure did boost my confidence. Now, what the mothers do to these children are horrific. I felt extremely sorry for AshLynn, the poor little girl got crushed by how her mother talked to her. If she ever sees this show she'll hate her mother. And the new born baby story, to me was just as bad. Babies, if not treated in the right condition can easily get VERY SICK. And taking the poor baby to the pageant opens him to a lot of diseases. That mother is sick.
47Hi
48Your right that mom was crazy to put that new born on there. I would never put my daughter in unless she wanted to do them, I ask her before a pageant do you want to quit and she says no because she loves them. We do little local ones no makeup none of what they do, ours is called natural pageants. She wears long flower girl dresses and no fake hair thats crazy, she is on stage about 2 minutes and then they crown. She also does halloween and Christmas and Valentines day. 1 every couple of months. It is nuts what the women today are doing in the pageant world to the kids. I know my daughter loves to do hers and I can sleep at night knowing that she is not mentally abused.
We as parents all lose our way sometime. Hopefully, she can find her way back and realize what she is really doing as a mother. I used to live in Austin and actually was an acquaintance of Jamie's. Not close or anything but at the time she very smitten with all her children. It is my understanding that all her girls were conceived thru IVF. Hopefully she can remember those days of longing for a child and realize her life is perfect without the pageants!
49I DVR'd this show and just watched it last night.
50I am still upset over Jamie Sterling's treatment of AshLynn this morning and totally agree that she is like the wicked step mother in Cinderella-except that she isn't the step but the MOTHER!
How could she be so mean? She must have serious issues. Maybe being so unattractive herself causes her to be so mean?
Ah-enough said about her.
I am only concerned over little AshLynn and how upset she looked. Never happy and always looked defeated.
I hope they don't let her view this episode that she appeared in. It will only serve to upset her further and will confirm what her mother thinks of her. So sad-she always seemed to be trying to please that donkey faced BIT#$ and just can't seem to.
Such an ugly woman-inside and out.
