There are two types of mothers: those that sit and enjoy a glass of wine while they wait for the babysitter to arrive and those who scurry around the house in a robe until the sitter comes a knockin'. Unfortunately, I fall into the latter category. In a rush to get to a dinner date the other night, I ran out of the house with my diaper bag on my shoulder rather than a sassy leather pocket purse.
Instead of my lip gloss and a powder compact, I was armed with Aquaphor and size three Pampers for my night on the town. Though my diaper caddy isn't too shabby, I was embarrassed to fish through wipes and raisins in front of my non-mommy friends. I bet Angelina Jolie never has this problem with six kids under seven.

I've honestly never grabbed the diaper bag by mistake, but I only use it for a few months. After that I just keep some diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes in the car, and regular tissues in my purse. If I have to combine it, I do, and then use a grab purse as my wallet, so I can just remove it when I don't want a larger purse.
It doesn't bother me to wade through toys, pacifiers, etc when out with friends. They know I'm a mom.
1I haven't used a purse since my 1st was born a little over 6 years ago. I don't use a fancy diaper bag either. I use a good quality back pack. Since I carry my kids, a shoulder bag just doesn't work. I could really care less about fishing through things because most of the "kid" stuff is in the wet bag that I keep all the diaper supplies in and then my stuff is just loose in the bag.
2The diaper bag I have cost me around $40 and looks pretty stylish and is spacious enough for the essentials. Like one of the moms mentioned, I have an emergency bigger diaper bag with diapers, wipes, extra toys and books, a clean sippy cup, and 2 sets of change of clothes for the accidents.
In the bag I carry, I have my sons snacks, wipes, books, and water in the big compartment. In the small one, are my keys, cell phone, and wallet. I'll save my fancy wallets and purses when my son and the new baby are old enough not to need those things.
