It's a toy story. There is no better factory of fun than FAO Schwarz's flagship store. With toy soldier greeters, life-sized stuffed animals and a world-famous walkable piano, the 145-year-old toy emporium has been a wonderland for lil ones and their parents for generations.
FAO Schwarz has been a backdrop in many feature films, including Big,
Baby Boom and Big Business and currently serves as the home of the make your own Muppet Whatnot Workshop and Make paint your own pottery studio.
This week, the luxury shop announced that it was moving under the Toys R Us umbrella, thus saving it from financial distress. Do you have a family tradition or memory tied to FAO Schwarz?

For my first xmas, my dad went to FAO to buy me an xmas present. The sales people there knew a sucker when they saw one
and he came home with a GIANT stuffed bear named Boo-Boo.
Boo-Boo is STILL at my parent's house (he's almost 27 years old!) and my mom gave him a 'face lift' by slicing open his neck in the back, restuffing him, and sewing him back up.
Seriously, that bear is about 3 feet tall.
2does going in, looking around with your kids and realizing that there is NOTHING you can afford count as a tradition? we did that for about 5 years, lol. haven't been back since.
3Only once did I ever get to take anything home from FAO Schwartz as a little kid, and the story behind it has always been one of my mother's favorites to retell.
My mom and my grandmother took me to the Radio City Christmas Show when I was about three and we did the walk-around-the-city thing after. We were planning on FAOSchwartz, and I was going to be allowed to spend my own money (probably all of about $20, how much can a 3 year old accumulate outside of birthdays? lol!) but we went to St. Patrick's Cathedral first. I asked my grandma what the collection boxes were for, and she explained that the church used the money to help the poor at Christmastime. Well, I decided I wanted to help too, and put all my money in the box. My mom and grandma were very impressed with me and told me I could have anything I wanted from FAO Schwartz when we went later.
Looking back, that promise could have been VERY dangerous, but I remember exactly what I picked out - I came home with a plush Madeline 'storybook' - it was this plush carrying case that opened up and had a stuffed Madeline doll in it and looked like a sleeping bag for the doll when you opened it, and had a story on the opposite side. That was 17 years ago now, and the doll's still in the family - it eventually got passed down to my baby cousin, but she still has it at her house. And I don't think I did too much damage on their wallets with it. ;]
