Just about every kid wants a pet during their childhood and begging and pleading generally play a role in acquiring animals. As a bargaining tool, children tend to promise to care for the furry friend — feeding, bathing and walking the newest family member.
First Lady Michelle Obama fell victim to such empty pledges from her two daughters, Sasha and Malia. She recently sold them out:
I got up at 5:15 a.m. in the morning to walk my puppy... Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I'm still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out. So for everyone who has a child asking for a puppy — you have to want the dog, as I do. I love my Bo.

My children will be born into a house that already has dogs in it, so they will never have to want one, we already have to, and if the kids were to ask for another that is "theirs" I would be totally open to the idea, knowing full well my hubby and I would do most of the caring for it. To be honest, I can never see us not having dogs in our house, and not having multiple dogs either, it would just feel so empty.
As a kid though, I was that kid that begged for a dog, and eventually got one, I did try to do a lot for it, but it turns out since my Mom was home all day he bonded with her, and created such an attachment that he wouldn't let anyone else bathe him, feed him, walk him, practically anything. He's 13 now and is still that way!! So yes the burden ended up on her, but with a different personality dog things might have been different!
1My 11 year old son has his own dog and does fairly well taking care of it. He has the occasional time where he doesn't want to but I don't think he could imagine life with out his dog. I also think it's what you expect out of your children and seeing that they follow through with the responsibility that having an animal brings.
2Growing up, our family was just like that Aphrosette, and now that im an adult, our house is! I cant imagine life without a couple dogs, so when my kids are interested in a puppy, I will undoubtedly get them one.
I think the early morning thing is just kinda how it goes until they are teenagers. Me and my three sisters did a HUGE job in taking care of our animals once we were over 10, and really understood the responsibility and the care that goes into another beings life. I pretty much hoarded every puppy that came into the house though, and i didnt mind getting up through the night and early morning when they are little.
3my girls each got a pet for their last birthday (february). the idea was that they would feed, change water, clean, etc. but i really don't want them touching the yucky poopie stuff, so i do the pets. they will give the food and "help" when i clean sometimes.
4Way to teach your children responsibilities Michelle and Barack, hold them accountable for wanting this dog, or else dont complain about it.
