My first trip down breastfeeding lane was not an enjoyable one. Aside from my boobs feeling like they were being feasted on by piranhas, I was doubly insulted when my doctor declared I had mastitis. In addition to drugs and rest, she prescribed nursing through the pain. Not particularly excited about her orders, I followed some simple tips to keep it as painless as possible. To see what they are, read more.
- Clean the breast before and after breastfeeding.
- Change nursing pads often.
- Pump if you miss a feeding.
- Use cold compresses to relieve the pain. Frozen bags of peas and corn always work well.
- To help drain the excess milk and clear plugged milk ducts, place warm, wet towels on the breast.
- Massage the infected breast in a hot shower to try to clear ducts.
- Drink water.
- Get rest.
Though it sounds frightening, having the baby breastfeed will help the mother reach her healthy status sooner than later.

Ugh Mastitis!!! Oh how I loathe you! I had mastitis multiple times. The hardest part was that every time they put me on an antibiotic it would give my daughter thrush. It went back and forth like that for 3 months! I finally had to stop breast feeding for my sanity. Luckily I had a lot of frozen breast milk saved up. Just seeing the word makes me cringe.

3I got it with my 1st and it knocked me flat out. But boy do those antibiotics works fast. So the second time I got the same symtons and KNEW what it was 2 hours after taking the antibiotics I was feeling so much better. DON'T skip ANY of the antibiotics for this. Then dose yourself up with Yogurt to get the good bugs back in your system.
