While I think parenting is the toughest full time job, I believe nannying is a close runner-up. Nannies often do what moms and dads are too tired or busy to do. When a mom finds a good one, she may very well welcome him or her into the home as another family member.
To ensure everyone is getting what they want and are financially entitled to, many families and caretakers sign a contract outlining hours, days, time off, sick days, taxes and household duties. While I love my nanny, I'm not sure I want to be locked into anything so concrete. So far, so good... knock on wood. What say you on the nanny contract: yea or nay?

The placement service that we are going through won't place a nanny without a contract, which we think is really the best way anyway. With a contract, everyone knows exactly what is to be expected of both parties. This person is your employee, and I think you really should keep everything on the up and up to protect yourself should any problems arise.
1Of course - it's an employee? wouldn't it benefit both parties? it's not about love or structure, it's about a fair and legal workplace, right?
2It seems foolish not to have a contract, to be honest!
3When I nannied, I had a contract and appreciated it, everything was laid out.
4I love the idea.
5The people I nanny for are always making up excuses for why they cant pay me on time. They actually owe me about $300 right now. They cant pay for child care but they have no problem going out to eat 5 days a week and buying their 3rd car. (the last one was upwards of $45,000) hmm.
I'm a nanny myself and love to have a contract. The one I'm in now states things like; I have to give a months notice if I were to quit; and same goes for them. It's really great. And there are some FLAKY people out there. Nannies or Parents; so I just choose contract.
6ABSOLUTELY!!! It sets the proper expectations for both sides. Be sure that you have a clause about social networking sites. You'd be amazed what your nanny will write about you and your kids on facebook.

8If you are getting your nanny through a service, I think you should have a contract. But if you are being more casual about the nanny experience and you trust the person you work with, I don't think you need it. Doesn't hurt though. I don't have a contract with my nanny.
9I would have a contract. It protects both parties involved. It can be so difficult and expensive to take care of your children. To find a trusted nanny is a job in itself. Once you find one you want to keep them.
10I would never work for a family without a contract and even further, proper taxes. I would think those would be the hardest areas to deal with if something were to go wrong.
If I were to ever hire a nanny which I doubt I wouldn't hire one without a fully drafted contract. Everything in writing for the good of all involved.
